Now at 3 she loves Elmo ABCs, Wally Kazam (letters/ words activities), Team Umi Zoomi Numbers, Goodnight Safari (educational), and Dr Panda's preschool- for fun.

I don't remember when she started, but she is 19 months now and likes her sofia the first apps, a sesame street abc app, a shape app, and a fisher price app. Sorry I don't know the app names. Her first app was called something like baby see and hear where it plays a sound and says the names of animals and objects. She still plays that occasionally. I didn't expect DD to use the ipad this young, but she would grab it from DH or me whenever we tried to use it, so we put her own apps on it. It's basically her ipad now because if I take it out, she wants it.

Re: Ipad..

We like the iTot flashcards to start out with. My DS took to the ipad quicker than my DD. She likes hearing the animal sounds next to the picture, like the puppy barks, the kitten meows.

They started somewhere around 1.5 years old.

I'd say about 2. Some of her favorite apps are:
Elmo ABC
Elmo 123
Nemo123
Peekaboo Barn
If you're happy and you know it
Mr. Potato Head

She's 18 months and uses the baby flash cards and the endless abc apps. They are very good. She knows her alphabet all her colors and can count to ten. She's been using it a few months now...

My MIL put apps on her ipad when DD was only a few months old. I didn't get an ipad until my past birthday and then put apps on it. It's not something she uses regularly, but I do let her play with it every once in awhile. She is 21 months.

Re: Ipad..

We got him his own mini for Christmas when he was 2.5 -
My little guy has been using mine or his brother's (somehow DH manages to keep HIS off limits) since .......forever.

They practice letters and numbers on it.
Umi Zoomi has a great counting/number recognition game - it's like a driving video game.

My little one loves a Dora app that's great for letter and letter sound recognition.

They also watch tv/movies on it - Not gonna lieChat Icon

ummm about 1 yr! By 16 months he was able to identify all of his colors...the alphabet...and 1-10 (and also navigate the ipad better than us). One of his first words was "yacht" because he loved the boat in the flash card app. He ONLY used flash card apps (and candy crush when we were playing it)...i think its called eflash apps. it has memory games, flash cards, matching, they ask what to point at and you touch the screen...etc. It was really educational. hes a little older now so we have two or three games we let him play with and let him watch his shows on youtube and also abc videos.

Just remember that the world they are going to live in is going to be a tech savy world so they have to know how to use this stuff...but at a really young age keep it at a minimum.

Re: Ipad..

My older son was 3 when we got our ipod touch. It very quickly became his.

My younger son who is now 3 has basically been born with some type of tablet in his life. I bought my DH a Kindle when DS was 1.5yo and he pretty much took it over within a few weeks.

ETA: Apps, my 3yo loves hte lego apps, skee ball, bowling and basketball shoot out. He has just recntly started with "fun" games. Everything before was educational....letter matches, letter sounds, tracing letters etc...
