Inappropriate gift. Just the frame and some words of encouragement would have been better. Comet and a toilet brush are cruel and degrading.

Yep. If that's the deal I can understand somewhat. I've worked in plenty of classrooms that teach self help skills. Sure, cleaning your toilet is a life skill but of all things to choose to celebrate it just seems to be a poor choice. Leisure activities are a life skill, get them a movie ticket. So is cooking, maybe give some of the utensils for a recipe they cooked together. There have to be many better choices than a toilet brush.
Oh, yes, I TOTALLY agree that it was a poor choice. A recipe, or apron, or anything would have been better. I'm just saying that I think it wasn't done with malicious intentions (or at least I hope so).

Exactly. I don't care what kind of vocational training or life lessons are being taught in the classroom, this is an entirely inappropriate gift for anyone. If I were the parent of this child, I would be raising some serious hell over this.

If a special education teacher makes a choice THIS poor without "malicious" intentions, I would not want her teaching my child, or any other child for that matter.
It's disgusting and insulting no matter how anyone tries to skew it.

OMG that is horrible! If I was the student I would gift the teacher a pile of shit and write a little note for the teacher saying for you just because this is what you are.

Ugh! So it wasn't a hoax. Sounds like that district needs to train their faculty and staff on manners and sensitivity.

another update:
STEVENS POINT — A special-education teacher who gave her students a graduation gift basket that included a toilet bowl brush and cleanser will not be disciplined by the school district, despite a parent’s outrage.
Instead, the Stevens Point Area Public School District released a statement Friday defending teacher Sue Felder.
The brush and cleaner were meant to “reinforce the independent living skills and other gains that students had made during their time in the program,” according to the statement, which noted that Felder bought the gifts, which included a picture frame and a card, with her own money.

That's absolutely horrible! How could anyone in the school district think that is an okay thing to do! You want to reinforce independent living skills? ?? But them a date planner!! Those poor students
