Concerns

So, I am wondering if anyone had a child who hardly rolled over but was fine. My 6 month old daughter (born 3.5 weeks early) rolled over from tummy to back multiple times in one day when she was 2.5 months old and never did it again. Just the other day she rolled tummy to back once to play with her toy, but normally won't. She is sitting up on her own unassisted. (Not pulling up into a sitting position, just if sat down, she can stay there on her own) My ped said some kids just skip a milestone (like skipping crawling) anyone else to through this?

My DD wasn't a big roller, she didn't really do it much until she was 8 months old. She also NEVER crawled. At 12 months old she was walking with assistance and at 15 months old she was walking on her own and that was when she tried crawling for the FIRST time too. She did it once and never really bothered again since she was walking.

I wouldn't sweat it. Kids develop at all different rates. My DS is the compete opposite of her. He was rolling over very early, crawling early, and walking by a year old. He's just more physical than her and definitely more of a risk taker, she was always very cautious.......still is.

But in the end, she's a perfectly normal, active little 5 1/2 year old.

One of mine rolled at 4 weeks. The other hardly did(twins) also one of my sons army crawled for months. Hardly ever crawled on his knees. Now they are 5 1/2 and both perfect as it relates to motor skills. I wouldn't be too concerned if she is sitting unassisted.

DS didn't roll over at all until almost 8 months old. He now does it a lot at almost 10 months old. He never crawled so far but is able to stand holding on to something. Only time will tell if he's fine with his motor skills or not. But I don't think it's that unusual. Your DD sounds like she's doing fine. Maybe she's just not interested in rolling over or has no need.

Concerns

Answering again since my first response disappeared. DD was like yours and rolled a few times here and there but not consistently. She did back to belly easily for awhile but when she realized it landed her in a position she didn't like she totally stopped. She did belly to back for about two days and never again. She hated being on her belly but loved to sit up to play. She sat unassisted under 5 months and I let her do it a lot even though she couldn't get up on her own. Same with standing, she did that well around 7 months and I let her but she couldn't get up or down on her own. Putting her in those positions before she could get herself there is my biggest regret. If I had forced the issue and only put her on her belly I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have been as delayed as she was. She ended up with PT at 14 months and thankfully caught up pretty quickly. My advice would be to really limit sitting her up and just put her on her belly constantly. Most likely, she'll figure out how to get up to sitting or onto her back. Also wanted to add, that skipping a milestone can be a big deal. DD never crawled and it can have consequences down the road. They can have difficulty writing since they don't fully develop the muscles in their hands and difficulty reading bc of the lack of experience with visual tracking form the crawling perspective. That's info I wish I knew back when DD was younger. I would just be sure to give her tons of opportunity to practice.

Mine rarely rolled and if they did it was back to belly. They didn't sit til 6.5 and 7 mo so at that point rolling wasn't necessary get what they wanted. They didn't crawl til 8 mo, but were walking at 11.5 and 12.5. Some milestones just come quicker.

My DS rolled belly to back since I wanna say 3 or 4 months but didn't go back to belly for a while. When I mentioned it to my ped, he said as long as he was rolling at least one direction, he wasn't concerned, and said eventually he would figure it out. Well..... I don't remember when it clicked, but now he's 9 months and rolls both ways like a champ. Actually, before he started crawling, he would roll across an entire room to get to the other side!!

Eta.. I really should have written this all down but I think around 6 months or so he rolled back to belly for the first time, but he did it seldom, and hated being on his belly..... It wasn't till like 7 months that he started rolling like a wild one. Now I can't even change his diaper because he flips over instantly..... And then tries to crawl away. Good times.)
