Bfing with supplementing

If you supplemented in the beginning was their a point you didn't need to anymore or did you always need to supplement a little?

DS is 2 weeks old and occasionally (every other day or so) I need to give him an extra 1/2 to 1 oz of Formula. There have been a few times that i have pumped so then i give him pumped milk instead of formula...but i am just wondering if I'll always need to give him extra or after a little while longer it wont be necessary.

Thanks.

I always had formula just in case I didn't pump enough or was not going to be home or sick had period ect. It took longer then 2 weeks for me to get a good supply so I would sup here & there but once my body got on a routine I didn't have to sup at all.

I don't BF b/c DD won't latch. I exclusively pump and have a low supply. She's 10.5 weeks old and while my supply has gone up enough to give her more BM than formula, I still don't have enough to make it through a whole day on only BM so we still supplement.

first 2 weeks of his life, i EBF.
from 2 weeks through 3 months i did about half BF and half FF.
at around 3 months, I stopped BFing and went to FF (by choice). I just hated pumping too much and FF was so much easier.

if you want to EBF, i wouldn't give formula - just BF more often so your son's not as hungry

I tend to agree. Especially with how little you're supplementing it just seems unnecessary. Teach your body that you need that extra and it will make it. If DC doesnt seem satisfied after a feeding just go back to the first side again. By the time you finish on the second side, your first is already starting to replenish so you can go right back to it. These first few weeks are the toughest but if you can get your supply established it will get so much easier soon!

ITA with all of this. If you want to EBF, don't supplement,

I supplemented here and there for the first 2 months with DD, but I realized it was counter productive. It's really hard, but just keep nursing, it will get better!

I recommend you see a lactation consultant. From what I am told, many peds are not all that knowledgeable regarding breastfeeding. I am not in the position to tell you how to feed your baby but I would definitely see a LC if I were you. I had a similar situation and I can say it made a huge difference for me.

I agree with the others who said not to supplement. I am a little more than three weeks in and like a pp said if he doesn't seem satisfied we go back to the first side. It can be exhausting but I know it's good for my supply and the entire process has gotten better during the last week or so.

Re: Bfing with supplementing

I have been doing the little bit of supplementing based on recommendation from an LC actually and the ped bc DS has been a bit jaundice and they both said that the more I can get into him the better and if i give him formula then i should pump so that's why i am doing a little bit of supplementing but for the most part i just let him nurse as much and as frequently as he wants. He is gaining weight and his color is improving so hopefully my supply will get solid and things will be good after our next check up.
