Completely ignoring toys!

I know how everyone jokes about how kids like non toy items (remote, plastic cups, toilet paper tubes, etc etc etc) better than toys themselves, but dd (17 mos) has wanted nothing at all to do with her toys for the past 2 months or so. I've tried to circulate in some new stuff but all she wants to do is hang all over me and try to grab stuff off of tables that she can't play with, or scream that she wants to go into the bathroom or be picked up to play with the locks on the front door. Honestly, it's exhausting that she won't entertain herself, and being that she's in daycare during th day I'm also battling some guilt. I'm finding myself dreading the summer, when I'm home from work.

Anyone else out there in the same boat? Any tips?

its a phase. dd was like that from 18 months to almost 20 months old. She's back to playing with them.

Omg my DD cries on a daily basis for the remote, my phone, the car keys, my purse, my eye drops, her vitamins, etc!!! Same things every day! She also goes through every cabinet and pulls the same things out 5x a day too.

She does however play with toys still and looks at her books a lot but whenever I need to get something done she is hanging on my legs and pointing to things on the counter lol!! Lately I take her outside a lot to just run around and we go to the park 2-3x a week! I am finding that keeping her busy is key! We do music class, play dates, go on walks, go to the gym and runerrands. It's hard to get things done when we are out a lot but I can't get things done when we are home so what gives!

Oh and forgot to add she wants to be picked up to play with the light switches or to turn her humidifier on and off!

You just described by 18-month-old DD. She hardly ever touches her toys and doesn't entertain herself very well at all.

Thank you everyone. Glad to know there's others in the same boat! Time to do the "hope this is just a phase" dance!

Melissa a Doug have some great switch puzzles & so on.
If you need toys that involve her current interests... Those help.

Involve your kid in your daily routine. Have her vacuum, sweep, clean, turn on lights when entering, turn off when leaving.

It's funny you say that. DS is 15 months and loves non-toys. His current favorite are our keys and trying to put them into doorknobs. I know he'll outgrow it. I'm sure your daughter plays with toys at day care, so maybe she needs more variety at home? Either way, though, she'll outgrow it, I'm sure.

It's definitely a phase. I remember a time period when I make a big effort to keep certain things out of her sight to avoid the meltdowns. I also used to avoid picking her up in the kitchen at all costs bc it always led to her wanting something on the counter she couldn't have. It will pass! In the meantime, try to give her something to play with similar to what she wants (an old remote with no batteries, a non sharp kitchen utensil, tupperware or an empty spice jar with a few cheerios to share around, etc).

The only thing DD plays with right now are dolls. She takes her clothes from her drawers and tucks in her dolls. She does this all day! Maybe not all day but long enough to entertain herself for awhile.
