 rice cooker
For some reason I just cannot make rice. I only make brown rice and it always comes out crunchy no matter how long I cook it, or I burn the bottom because I cook it too long. Thinking of getting a rice cooker is it worth it? How does it work - how long does the rice cook for? Does it come out good? Thanks!

how are you cooking the rice? what ratio are you using? do you keep the lid on entire time, and turn to low heat after it boils?
rice cookers do work well though. you will def have success.

I follow the directions for the ratio and lately i've been adding more water. I do keep the lid on the entire time and flame on low, but I think even with the flame on low its too much maybe i should use the smallest burner I have...could it be the brand I am using?

Sometimes I move the pot so only half the burner is touching the pot. It needs to be very low.

 Re: rice cooker
Also with brown rice you need to soak it for a little in water just to get it a little soft other wise it takes way too long to cook.

I never do this, and don't have an issue... but it does take a while to cook. I love using brown rice for risotto believe it or not.

 Re: rice cooker
I have a rice cooker (I got it as a gift), and I've never used it.
But I had 2 other thoughts:
  1) Have you tried making it in the oven? I've done that method, and have had good success. I don't have a recipe handy, but if you search for oven baked brown rice, you will find some recipes giving instructions. It's not great for summertime, since you have to have the oven on, but for other times of year, I think anything you can throw in the oven and be hands-off with is great, especially for entertaining.
  2) Have you tried the "quick cooking" bags of brown rice? They are par boiled and cook quickly. I use them a lot for quick weeknight dinners. Each bag is a small portion, but for just me and DH it's fine.

 Re: rice cooker
I use a rice cooker all the time. I just stick the rice in there and leave it alone, it lets me prepare everything else. Rice takes about 20 mins and come out great every time.
