My MIL is watching my kids over a weekend that my older DC has a party. It is at a petting zoo. DC #2 would probably love it. Is it too much to ask to bring DC#2 (definitely would offer to pay her ticket). Is that tacky? Should I just decline the invite?

It is tacky you should just decline if you do not have child care for your younger child.

It depends on how close you are to the host. If you're friends, just ask. I wouldn't care if my friend brought their little one.

I've been to so many parties for my DD since she started Kindergarten this year and every party has had younger siblings there for one reason or another.

ETA - My DS is one and there have been times I've had to bring him with me when taking to DD to one of her parties. I just keep him busy in the stroller. Sometimes I don't have a choice but to bring him.

I would only take the child who is invited. I only have one child now, but I know my close friends (the ones I would feel comfortable asking to take a second because I know they wouldn't get annoyed) would automatically have invited the second child anyway, so the issue would be moot. [My sister and her kids often visit, and her daughter is about the same age as my son. My close friends automatically invite my niece to things as well, and I would do the same for them, without a second thought.]

Other, less-close friends or just parents of the birthday kid -- if they aren't close enough to me to know I have a second kid or if they do know I have another kid but didn't invite him/her... I would not ask to bring the second.

I would call the host to decline. Let her know that you will be away that weekend and your mom will have both kids and you have no other child care. She will either say, oh ok. Or she will extend the invitation to your younger one.

This exactly. If you're close enough that they know you have a 2nd child, then the 2nd child probably would've been invited.

The only way I think it's ok is if you have someone take your other child, so she's not with the party and off doing her own thing.

Is the petting zoo open to the public? or its closed for just the party? If its open to the public then I don't see why you can't pay and bring your other child.

I agree with pp and would decline.

Not the same as your situation but when DS had his party a few weeks ago, BOTH parents came with the invited child plus an older sibling.

I was like Chat Icon because one of the parents could have stayed with the older child. They paid for their extra child (which I appreciated Chat Icon ) but it was still weird.

If you are offering to pay for the other child's ticket then I don't think it's tacky at all.

I wouldn't be put off if someone asked to do that. But I'm a " the more the merrier" type and usually keep parties smaller so that I am able to include the invited guest's siblings.
