Jewish mommies-baby naming ceremony

How common is a baby naming ceremony for girls? What typically happens here and where is it held?

Jewish mommies-baby naming ceremony

I think it's very common. We had dd's at 3 months. We did it at our temple on a Sunday followed by a brunch. It was very important to me bc she is named after my mother and took her Hebrew name.

Re: Jewish mommies-baby naming ceremony

As for how common - every jewish family that I know have had baby naming parties for their daughters whether they were both jewish or an interfaith family.

All of the baby naming ceremonies I have been to have been in the parents or a grandparent's house. I have heard of them taking place in a temple, restaurant, hotel ball room too.

As for who can perform one - look for a reform rabbi or cantor in your area. I am not positive - but see if http://jcbsynagogue.org/ either the rabbi or cantor will help you.

As an FYI - my DD is now 4 1/2 but I made a $750 donation to the temple. I am not sure if that is more or less than others but it was about the price of DS bris so that is why I picked that amount.

ETA: We had it at my parent's house. We had bagels, lox, salads, etc.

This. We had DD1's when she was 4 months and DD2's when she was 6 months old. Held the whole thing in our house. DH's best friend is in rabbinical school and he officiated =)

It's fairly common to have a babynaming (also known as simchat bat) for a girl. We had dd's when she was 5 months old. It's not a time bound commandment like a Brit milah is for a boy, so you can do it at anytime.

Feel free to fm me w any questions.

We has Rabbi Alan Stein come to the house. He was excellent! My dh is Christian Orthodox and he had no issue with it. His ceremony was about 20 min then I had smoked fish platters catered from fairway. If you want his # pm me.

Every Jewish baby girl I know had a baby naming ceremony. Some were very small and had only parents/grandparents there, and I went to a very large one at a synagogue's catering hall.

For my DD, we did it at her first birthday party. The cantor came to our house and we did it in the backyard under a small tent, then had food and birthday cake.

I know Rev Deb does them ... and she has a Rabbi that she works with if you prefer a more Jewish approach (they do interfaith too). Don't remember the number but i'm sure you can find it on LIW lol Chat Icon Good luck

Re: Jewish mommies-baby naming ceremony

It's usually a short ceremony performed by a rabbi or cantor... some prayers & telling of the baby's Hebrew name/ who Baby was named for. Similar to a bris but minus the "snip"
Usually at home of synagogue, we had ours at a catering hall b/c we had a lot of people.
