Breastfeeding and sore nipples

I have had DS latch checked and it appears to be fine. My nipples, however, do not agree. They are so sensitive - OMG! I have been applying lanolin like crazy. I have done salt water rinses. I have self expressed milk. Does anyone else have words of wisdom? I have been BF for 8 days.

Tomorrow I will be giving the LC a call.

Medela makes these hydrogel pads for sore nipples that are amazing- the LC in the hospital have them to me when my DD split my nipple. They really help.

Re: Breastfeeding and sore nipples

i found these to be a huge help in those early weeks. i know it is awful to have cracked and bleeding and sore nips. if you can, try to soldier through it. i found giving the sorer boob a break and favoring the other side here and there helped me. it may not be recommended by the BF powers that be, and i did nurse on the more painful side, but not as often early on. also i found pumping helped me a lot with the pain bc it gets the nipples nice and moist. good luck!!!! Those first few weeks are rough with sore nipples. Keep applying ointment and as a pp said, those gel pads are good.

Thank you so much!!! I wanted to make sure I was not alone. DS clusterfed the first night when I had no idea what I was doing so I think most of the damage was done then. I just started pumping so I am hoping that at least gives them an occasional break.

Breastfeeding and sore nipples

The first month was hell. Sore, cracked nipples and sharp back pains. After 30 days it all went away.

Unfortunately it takes time. I'm sure this is not what you want to hear but they with get tougher (your nipples) and it eventually won't bother you.

If his latch is fine, the pain is (sadly) normal. It'll go away in another week or so. Hang in there.

The first three weeks for me really hurt and the third week felt like razors slicing my nips. It took everything to not scream out in pain. I even got a little scab from cracking. Used lanolin and didn't think it did much. After 3 weeks literally one day it just magically stopped and didn't hurt after that! You have to just power through and get your nips tough lol. Good luck!

Breastfeeding and sore nipples

I am having the same problem. My nips are both scabbed so badly that they cover the entire nipple. I would cry out in pain when she latched and for the first few minutes. I bought a nipple shield to try to help and it just filled with blood, horrifying my DH and me. Now I am pumping and supplementing. My ped said she wasn't gaining quickly enough. I called an LC but she can't come until I'm completely healed.

Do any LCs accept insurance? $200 seems like a lot! I hope this gets better, but I don't know if I can handle it. I'm so torn about what I should do- EP, BF, keep supplementing... How did you ladies handle every 3 hours pumping or feeding? I'm beyond exhausted!

My hospital actually has a free LC that you can see. Does your ped office have anyone who specializes in it? Mine has 2 nurses.

I wish my DS ate every 3 hours! He is an eating machine - every 2 hours. He also clusterfeeds every single night for 2-4 hours. I try to nap 1-2 times a day on average, I am getting four hours of sleep a day on good days.

Breastfeeding and sore nipples

I exclusively pump and dealt with sore nipples for weeks. Lanolin and coconut oil were my best friends. Eventually my nipples got tougher or I just stopped feeling pain. Dd is 8w

Hang in there! Like everyone else said, it does get better. It's exhausting in the beginning. DD fractured her left clavicle coming out of the birth canal, so she favored my left breast because it was more comfortable having her right shoulder/side up against me. She tore up my right breast early on, scab and everything. I persevered and it worked out but wow, the pain and stress of wondering if she was getting enough.

Re: Breastfeeding and sore nipples

Totally had this for the first month or so. cracked/scabbed nips. Things that helped as others mentioned were
1. Lots of lansinoh cream
2. Airing out the nips
3. *Switching holds frequently * ( so football one feed to cross cradle at the next etc to change the mouth position on the nipple)
4. Time- those suckers toughen up

Congrats and goodluck!

Agree! I've breastfed 3 kids (still bfing #3 at 13 months) and all of the above helps. Also, express a little breast milk and rub it on your nipple after nursing and let it air dry. Never put them away wet!

It does get better. It was also the worst about a week or so into it and then got better.

I pretty much walk around with no top on all day. Hopefully DH does not get too used to it.

As for switching holds, he can only latch well from football.

hmm my DS was like that too in the beginning the football hold was by far our preferred position but that being said even if you do the first side in football (so you know he get a good feeding) when you switch sides try the less effective position to give that other side a break. Then next feeding you can switch the two sides up again. My DS went from football hold feeding to cross cradle but never was able to do any other hold and relied exclusively on the my Bestfriend pillow ( it saved my back and my wrists!). LOL about your DH and topless mommy :)

Re: Breastfeeding and sore nipples

It's normal. Chat Icon It shouldn't be very painful while DC eats though. If you're in a lot of pain more than a minute or so after DC starts nursing, you may need to take DC off and get a better latch. It took about 6-8 weeks for me to not feel any pain or soreness from BFing. It's tough at first, but it gets better.

The initial latch is what kills me. Today it's a little better. After the initial latch, it is more like a tug - noticeable but not painful per se. I have almost dozed off before so it's not that painful.

Thanks for all the advice ladies.

This. But the gel soothies definitely helped. I refrigerated them first.

In the beginning and even now when he's going through a growth spurt and my nipples get sore I nurse on the side that isn't as sore and pump the other side till it heals.

Re: Breastfeeding and sore nipples

Try a nipple shield. They were a Godsend for me with DS #1. Apparently I have "inverted nipples" which made it very difficult to get a good latch and it just constantly hurt. One of the nurses suggested trying a shield and I never looked back! Used them for 9 months, and I will be stocking up again in preparation for DS #2.

I did use the soothies gel pads in between nursing sessions also, and Lansinoh cream helped too.
