extended BF'ers - advice needed

DD just turned 1 and is showing zero signs of wanting to wean. I bought cow's milk to start her on it, but am still wanting to BF -- I guess neither of us are ready to let it go.

I was going to start putting 1/4 of WCM into her bottle of BF. Ped said do that for a few days.

But if I do that for a bottle or 2 during the day with the nanny, can I still give her BM or still BF?

During the week, I BF 3 times a day. In the AM, when I get home from work and at night. She is EBF on weekends and when I'm off. Although I have been guilty of BF when she wakes up in the middle of the night - which has been pretty often recently.Chat Icon

Any pointers on how to do this???

Of course you can continue on exactly as you are - just mix with cows milk until she takes it no problem, then give cows milk while you are at work and bf when you are together. That is my plan too - starting to mix in cows milk in Monday.

I slowly weaned off the pump at work. Your supply is well established now so there will be milk whenever she wants to nurse. I nurse mornings and evenings during the week andlall day long on the weekendsChat Icon

My DD never took a bottle, so when it came time for cows milk (she had an allergy, so we did coconut milk at first) I gave it in a sippy cup at breakfast. She was used to the sippy bc she drank water from it. When she was 1, we still BF in the morning, before naptime, before bed, and in the middle of the night. Then I offered coconut (or cows) milk in the sippy during the day (i didn't mix it with BM). I never worried about how much she drank bc I knew she was still getting BM from me. You can definitely still BF as much as you want and give cows milk at other times. I think I aimed for 8-12oz of milk from the sippy at first. DD BFd until she turned 2... And was never a big milk drinker, and still isn't. She eats well and drinks lots of water, so I don't worry about it.

(also, don't feel bad about the night nursing, it's still normal at that age bc babies are very active and busy during the day and night time is a time for her to get in a good nursing session and reconnect with you. I cut out the naptime nursing before the middle of the night session, it was the fastest & easiest way to get her back to sleep).

Dd is 18 months and she still BFs, although not as often as she used to. But when she turned 1 and for several months after she was still BFing throughout the day, every few hours. I would also offer her cows milk in her sippy cup with meals. I never mixed breastmilk and cows milk but only bc I don't pump. But I don't think it could hurt to mix them.

Now as dd is nursing less and less(I think she's self-weaning) I've been giving her more cows milk and she loves it.

If neither are ready you don't have to stop. I was going to stop, or start to stop at 12mos but right at her bday she was still such a baby to me and we had a great routine. So I continued doing what I was doing. When she turned 18mos and was moved to a different classroom at daycare there are no bottles in that room. So I retired the pump and give her coconut milk. She eats yogurt daily and cheese often so I thought milk was excessive, but she still breast feeds before bed, when she wakes at night, and in the am.

This is what has wound up working for us and I would have never thought it! My plan is to nurse till 2.

This is sooo good to know. How much milk does she get a day ( not including BM(. I'm rying to figure out the right amount for her. Ped said anywhere from 16-20oz a day but but I'm curious what others do.

She gets a straw sippy cup of coconut milk at school and water in another. She rarely finishes the coconut milk. She's not that into it. She nurses about 4x a day. She eats breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks. Sometimes three, so most of her nutrition is probably from food.

My ped said when she was 12mos as long as she nurses 3-5x a day she doesn't need cow milk.
