Valerie Harper Says She's 'Absolutely Cancer-Free'
Valerie Harper has exciting news to share.
The former "Dancing with the Stars" contestant has gained ground in her battle with brain cancer.
"I'm absolutely cancer-free!" she told Closer magazine. "My last scans have been positive, and my doctors are very happy."
Last March, Harper, 74, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. At the time, doctors told her she could have just a few more months to live. However, a few weeks ago, her medical team was astounded by her test results.
"[The oncologist] looked at the scans and said, ‘Oh my God, Valerie, this is very encouraging!'" she said. "I’m now the poster child for not believing everything I’m told."
Though Harper said that her doctor will not use the term "remission" — "He likes to say, 'I give you a treatment, and it’s either responsive or nonresponsive — and you are having a phenomenal response,'" she said — she noted that she feels much better. She's also cutting down her visits to the doctor to just once every eight weeks, and she's taking a "pulse dose" of medication once each week.
"There may come a time when I'm not feeling good," she said. "But then again, that time may never come."

What great news! I lost my stepfather to brain cancer 5 years ago and I know just how awful and aggressive it can be. I am so happy to hear she found a treatment that is working well for her!

It seems that these statements were taken out of context... I just read an article on People where she clarified that she meant the rest of her body is still cancer-free... but her brain cancer is still there. It's just responding very well to treatment. Still great news though, considering she was only given a few months to live more than a year ago!

Wonderful news. My MIL died from brain cancer in January. Horrible way to go...not sure type Valerie has, but this is GREAT news, and I am glad she is tolerating the treatment so well.

Yes, I saw her on tv last night. She is NOT cancer free. This kind of cancer usually spreads but this has not spread through her body so she meant her body is cancer free. The cancer IS still in her brain but she is doing well. She looked great!
