Freestyle music
I come from Queens and grew up listening to freestyle. I LOVE it! My DH grew up on LI and never really heard about freestyle music. He always told me that it must be a Brooklyn/Queens thing. I'm curious if that's true. For those raised on Long Island , did you listen to freestyle growing up? Just curious!

Re: Freestyle music
Funny, a coworker and I were just having a similar conversation. I had never heard of it and she LOVED it. We are both in our mid thirties so I apparently lived through it.
She said it was like Lisa Lisa, Sweet Sensation, Taylor Dane, Rob Base etc. I know all of the songs, but I still have no idea what "freestyle" means or why these songs are classified as freestyle. Are they not just dance music?
Either way, she is from Dix Hills and I grew up just a few towns over, so I don't know that its JUST a city ting.

See when I think of freestyle, I think of TKA, Cynthia, Johnny O, Stevie B, Judy Torres, etc. It's a certain type of music. It's hard to explain!

Re: Freestyle music
Yes. I listened to all of that music growing up on LI but some of it was when I was in college and my friends were from the city. Those groups would perform on campus, too!!!! Who remembers TKA?? They performed everywhere. Still, I only really remember calling it freestyle after the fact.
ETA: I see TKA was mentioned above. I think the biggest hit was One Way Love. Oh and Rob Base---was it even a party if they didn't play It Takes Two?
I just asked my husband and he always called it club music back then.

Re: Freestyle music
LI girl...I like some freestyle. For some reason, I can't stand TKA. Give me a little Will To Power or Alisha and I'm a happy & grooving girl.

I grew up here on the South Shore, and all of my family is from the 5 Towns.... we LIVED freestyle, but at the time we just called it club music. Here's the funny part: I never admitted to liking it until much later. I was really into hair bands, and the 2 didn't mix but I knew every Stevie B and TKA song. I loooooooved the Cover Girls. :D

Re: Freestyle music
Grew up in gravesend Brooklyn. Loveeeeee freestyle. Went to the concert this summer at Pennysaver amphitheater. It was awesome. DH grew up on LI and has no clue about it.
I find it's definitely a borough thing. And also very much an Italian or Hispanic thing.
I have 1 friend living out here who is from Brooklyn and we do the concerts together.
