Re: Something every parent, caregiver, grandparent etc. should read. Warning: It is extremely sad

My 3 year old niece pulled an ENORMOUS dresser over one morning...my sister in law heard a crash...both she and my BIL ran upstairs to find the dresser tipped over with my niece under it...but it fell at such an angle that her bed stopped it from completely crashing on her..she was caught in the space just between the bed and the dresser.

My SIL called me and was shaking uncontrollably. She said she was a wreck the rest of the day...my niece was fine but had the bed been just a few inches further, or in another area, my niece would NOT be alive..there is no way. They tried to figure out how it could have possible happened...my niece had actually pulled a bottom drawer out and stood inside the drawer to reach something on top...that is all it took. It's still crazy to us because its a solid mohogany piece of furniture that weighs a ton...but it tipped.

Moral of the story, you just never know. I need to buy things to restrain our furniture..I haven't done it yet, stupidly, but will do so today.

I'm bumping this because a friend just posted on facebook about her daughter opening and climbing into drawers on her dresser. It is just after the "angelversary" so I thought the reminder was timely and fitting.Chat Icon

I just read this and it is just horrific.

Several years ago my nephew climbed up on a cheap tv stand and a huge ass tv fell on him, the square kind. Without divulging too much he was severely hurt and years later still has some issues resulting from it. It was horrific and traumatic, however it happened at someone else's house. He was close in age to this little girl. So please be careful at other peoples houses too! He could have easily died and almost did, his parents were in another room and he was with siblings and it happened in an instant.

This is agonizing. I'm forcing my husband to anchor everything in our bedroom to the wall

I am sure that this mother's blog post has helped to save many lives. Her story showed me that even furniture that is low to the ground needs to be anchored. My son has gotten a lot taller in the past year so I can worry less about him getting crushed, but my house also has to be safe for visitors and for him. Tomorrow I am going to check my china cabinet. He is rarely in that room and I can't remember whether we anchored it. We have no reason not to. We had the baby proofer so I can't see how he would have missed that.

Thanks for bumping this post. I bought straps a long time ago for DS's dresser but DH keeps coming up with excuses to put it off. I emailed him the article hoping this will open his eyes to how serious this is. Such a sad story, I couldn't even read the whole thing.

I read this a while ago and made my DH go out and buy stuff to secure everything to our sons wall. Chat Icon

ETA when I was younger a tall dresser fell on me and my sister while we were playing. Luckily we both were fine but my sister got caught under it and all I remember is screaming my head off for help and trying to lift it (I was about 8 so there was no way that was happening) to try and find my sister. We both go so lucky that we only had bruises on our bodies.

Re: Something every parent, caregiver, grandparent etc. should read. Warning: It is extremely sad

I remember reading this last year, we just moved DD in to her big girl room with a big girl bed and she was always opening the dresser drawers and going through them.

That week I went out and bought the straps to secure the furniture to the wall.

My heart breaks for this family, but I'm thankful for them spreading awareness to save other children's lives.

Re: Something every parent, caregiver, grandparent etc. should read. Warning: It is extremely sad

Reading this last year was the kick in the @ss DH needed to go out THAT day and buy straps for all the furniture.
Before that, he would poo poo me and say I was being paranoid and there was no way DD would be able to tip a dresser or piece of furniture over onto herself.
This story shook him to the core. And that is not easy to do.
I haven't stopped thinking about it since reading it either. All year it has popped into my head.
I will never forget how it affected me. I can't even think about it now without getting upset.
I know that this story will and has saved lives....

I raised my baby sister, and never once heard to secure the dresser, growing up none of our furniture was secure! I have forwarded this to all of my preggo friends as well as my DH!

This is just horrific :( I sobbed like a baby reading it.....question my kids dresser drawers have those locks inside so kids can't open them enough to climb is that enough? Or should dressers be mounted to the walls too?

Mounted. If the drawers open enough to step up its enough. It takes 15 minutes and costs $5.

Thank you for bumping this. I had bought the safety mounts 2 years ago after reading this for the first time. Never actually mounted them. DH is drilling them in right now. The only thing we can do to honor this little girl is to protect our own. Chat Icon
