coat for 16m old in car seat
What do you have? I have a little North Face but I feel like it's annoying around her face/chin with the zipper all up in there.
Any suggestions? A lightweight but warm coat?

I have a coat from OshKosh....it's the rain type material on the front with a fleece-lined interior. It also has a hood. She can leave it unzipped or zippered depending on how cold it is. Let me see if I can find a picture.
ETA: This isn't the design we have. We have a solid pink jacket with a purple interior, but maybe it's from last season.

coat for 16m old in car seat
I just got the heavyweight 4 in 1 from oshkosh for my 17 month old. It has a thin layer she can wear in the carseat and then the heavy layer I plan to throw over to and from the car. I was looking at another 4 in 1 they had online but when I saw it in the store I realized it didn't seem all that warm if she's going to be outside for a longer stretch.
I had the Children's Place version last year but she never wore it bc the inner part was too small and the outer layer was always huge on her.

Unzip it. Put the straps right against her hips and body so they're tightened properly then zip it over the straps. This serves a few purposes, the zipper won't be all up in her face and the straps well be tight enough because they are against her body as opposed to over the coat.

Need to ask a question before the right answer can be given. Is your child rear or forward facing?
If your child is rear facing than the answers given so far are wrong except for Potofluck's answer and the suggestion of a lightweight coat by Mrs T809.

Since mine is the only other answer, how is it wrong? Considering I was told this by an installer. I'm truly curioussince I do this wwith my son and plan on doing so with my DD

last year and this year we will be rear facing with our 2 year olds. last year we either did a solid (heavy weight) sweatshirt. and put the jacket on after, or unzipped the jacket, fastened the car seat, then re zipped the jacket.

Actually since the child should be rear facing until 2 years old, we will be back in the spring before you turn the child around. You cannot use the zipping the coat around the straps for a rear facing child.
Best thing you want is a non puffy jacket as it puts too much cushioning between the child and the straps. Go with a Northface type jacket. They are warm and do not have too much puffiness.
Remember that unless you are walking outside with the child you are going from to car to the house or another building. The exposure to the outside is minimal at best and you are going from a warm environment to another. There really is no reason to bundle a baby.

Chris - Why do you say you can't zip around the baby when they are RF though? When DS was RF I was told by an installer that it was okay to do. And I did. But I won't with DD if there's a legit safety issue. Please advise.

Yes, she's RF.
I was really looking for a specific jacket that is similar to NorthFace - I think I'm just gonna get a fleecy character one from Old Navy.
Seems warm, and I can put the hood up so it's not all bunched around her neck and the straps.

I go with the CP 3 in 1 for the season - they wear the fleecy part in the car and the outer layer when they go outside for play at school on chilly days.

the children's place and Lands End both have excellent light weight, WARM coats - So there is no bulk under the car seat straps -
I've been buying from there since I had my first (who's now 4) I prefer lands end, but 16 months may still be a bit too small .......

For rear facing the seat is designed to bounce and keep the child in place with the straps. By zippering around the child you are constricting the straps and so the dynamic of movement may be changed.
Forward facing is a bit different with how the child reacts in a crash so you can get away with the zippering. But to be honest - if not a puffy coat keep it behind the straps.
Unzipping only prevents the front of the coat touching the straps on the body. Read facing we do not want anything between the shoulder and the straps.
