Russell Brand Kicked Out of GQ Awards For Pointing Out Hugo Boss Made Nazi Uniforms

While speaking at GQ‘s Man of The Year Awards, Russell Brand thought it’d be hilarious to joke about the fact that Hugo Boss, the event’s sponsor, made a fortune selling uniforms to the Nazis. Which it was unless you’re an editor for GQ whose corporate sponsor you (accurately) linked to one of the most historic genocides in the history of man. Via The Daily Mail:

While on stage, Brand told the gathered celebrities and politicians, ‘If anyone knows a bit about history and fashion, you know it was Hugo Boss who made uniforms for the Nazis.’
He then added, with less than subtle irony, ‘But they looked ******* fantastic, let’s face it, while they were killing people on the basis of their religion and sexuality.’
…
Shortly afterwards, Brand was kicked out by the magazine’s editor, Dylan Jones. According to the comedian’s Twitter feed, the two men exchanged angry words, with Jones saying, ‘What you did was very offensive to Hugo Boss.’ Brand replied, ‘What Hugo Boss did was very offensive to the Jews.’

First off, BAH-ZING! Second off, probably my favorite part of this whole ordeal is when the Daily Mail attempts to point out that Hugo Boss wasn’t exactly an active Nazi, he just joined the party to make an insane profit from Herr Fuhrer’s practically innocent little Blitzkrieg and took advantage of the forced labor from occupied countries who then occasionally died from the work conditions. Which – FOR THE RECORD! – were better than others. It’s not like he was out there gassing Jews with a tiny mustache. In fact, as the Daily Mail reports, Hugo Boss was able to successfully appeal his post-war status to the lesser category of “follower” as opposed to an active promoter of Nazism which was surely based on his fine character and not substantial wealth. Politics just doesn’t work that way. Oh no no no, balderdash.

Wow. Truth hurts, don't it? What kind of speech did they expect Russell Brand to give?

Wow -

I personally think it wasn't the time or place to make that statement about a corporate sponsor of a major event -

Howver, I didn't know that re: Hugo Boss .......and now that I do, won't set foot into his store.

I have no issue with him bringing it up there. People aren't going to think to look up something like this themselves.

Companies that collaborated with the nazis

This is the best line of that article:

the two men exchanged angry words, with Jones saying, ‘What you did was very offensive to Hugo Boss.’ Brand replied, ‘What Hugo Boss did was very offensive to the Jews.’

not sure how to post links, but i was wondering if russell ever wore hugo boss. did some searching and it appers he has.

as my DH put it : a former addict who's a hypocrite!??! NO WAY!!!

not saying hugo boss didn't deserve it, but if russell was so against the company's business practices, maybe she shouldn't have attended the awards ceremony?

Yeah, that line got a real chuckle from me.

On a whole I thought the entire speech was hysterical. I also had to laugh because at some points he was downright making fun of the industry and the people in the audience just sat there and laughed. Kinda makes you wanna say, "hey jackass, he's talking about YOU" Chat Icon

That's a very interesting article. The Holocaust was an awful, awful event.

That being said, I think it is unfair to boycott these companies of events that happened. It happened a while ago and we should never forget the horrors that happened. I'm not a Nazi in any way, shape, or form. The people that work for these companies now had no part in the atrocities that happened. I'm also pretty sure that they don't participate in Nazi policies these days. German guilt over the holocaust is huge. They feel very remorseful.

I work in the IG Farben (the company that worked with Bayer for Zyklon B) building in Frankfurt. It was the main headquarters. It is now a university. It is also a museum of sorts and on every floor there are pictures with explanations of the history of IG Farben with the horrors that they committed. They are very remorseful and it is used as a tool to teach others that what happened was very, very wrong. Everything they did was wrong. I believe that and I'm still amazed that this atrocity happened. Perhaps you should boycott my posts because I work there? Incidentally, the building was used after the war as the US NATO headquarters. Let's boycott NATO as well.

DH will be working for Siemans, too. It's a shame that they had to use the word Zyklon for a new line of ovens. That was very insensitive. However, it is a word in the German language. As is the word Fuehrer. Driving license in German is Fuehrerschein. Where do you draw the line? Should certain words not be used anymore?

A company is not a person. A company is just a collection of people and the history of the company does not reflect the practices of that company today.

Just my 2 cents.
