My DS is 2 1/2 and has lots of words, but doesn't make very long sentences. A lot of the time when he sees something or has something he'll say "mommy" I'll say "yes" and he'll hold up the bear he's holding and say "bear." He doesn't/hasn't said something like "mommy I have a bear." He can say simple sentences like "close the door" "in the room" "I want cookies" "daddy did it" daddy the doors open" "what's that?" "Thank you" etc. A lot of the time he asks for things by saying one word such as "water" "cookies" "yogurt" etc. he usually doesnt elaborate like "i want water." Is this something to be concerned about?

You can always call early intervention & see if they feel that you should have evaluation. My twins are 22 months & both speak in sentences now. They are boys

I think your DS is on track... at 2 to 2 1/2, they start combining words and you mentioned that he's been producing 3 to 4-word sentences. The number of words they have in this age range from 100 to 300, and the word combinations start. If your DS understands what you tell him and is able to follow one to two-step instructions, and can answer simple questions, can label pics, etc. then it tells you his receptive language is on par as well. If in doubt, call Early Intervention for a screening. Online, bing or google the Ages & Stages questionnaire. The communication section will give you an idea where he's at.

Thank you! Yes, he can do all of that. He answers yes/no questions and more complex questions like "who is your favorite singer?" I didn't do an actual count, but I'm certain he says atleast 300 words. I wasn't worried until I noticed he doesn't talk in sentences for when he's asking for something he says "mommy milk" or "more milk"

I think he's on track maybe even a little advanced. I don't think they should be speaking in proper sentences yet. My son is 2 and says things like " where baby shoes?" And " give baby cookies"

i'm a speech therapist... I can't say for sure because I've never met him... but it sounds like hes on track! Chat Icon its not like he doesn't combine words at all- you were saying he uses simple sentences a lot. So it sounds like hes just been busy learning all the new words, and now hes starting to learn how to put them together.
and some of it can be a little laziness, too LOL I mean think about it- as adults, a lot of times we give one word answers or use abbreviations to get our point across quicker Chat Icon
I would just keep modeling longer sentences. like when he wants a cookie, and just says "cookie"... you can say "I want a cookie". so he hears the whole sentence, and eventually he'll probably start using the full sentences. or when he has his bear and says "bear", you can say " you have a bear!" just so he hears how he can extend his sentences.
but it sounds like he's doing pretty well right now!

Re: 2 1/2 year old speech question/concerns

All i know is that at my 3 year old's well visit they asked- can she form a 4 word sentence
So a 4 word sentence seems to be a milestone for age 3.
You still have plenty of time to hit that- and he seems to form 3 word sentences from what you wrote- so he seems to be on track.

My son does that too, with food especially. Whatever he wants he just says it - grapes, crackers, bar... He just started saying "I eat" but not saying what he wants to eat lol I just try to encourage sentence by saying "You want grapes? I'll get you some grapes to eat." He is 28 months
