Demi Lovato to Join ‘Glee’

Fox Broadcasting Co. will add an “X Factor” into the fifth season of “Glee.”

The network confirmed Monday that “The X Factor” judge Demi Lovato will have a recurring role on the show. First reported by TVLine, the 20-year-old former child star will play Dani, a struggling New York-based artist who befriends Rachel (Lea Michele) and Santana (Naya Rivera). Her several episodes-long arc will begin on Oct. 3 with her appearance in the second part of “The Beatles” tribute episode.

Fox Broadcasting Co. is part of Twenty-First Century Fox Inc.FOXA -1.66%, and until recently was part of the same company as The Wall Street Journal.

Lovato will also have several musical numbers with Adam Lambert‘s character, the details of which have yet to be announced.

Leaning on the Fox family, Lambert is the latest “American Idol” alum to join the musical comedy series. Before him, season 11 runner up Jessica Sanchez played a rival diva singer for multiple episodes in the Ohio-based part of the series.

For Lovato, the role of Dani signals her return to acting after “Sonny With a Chance,” her Disney Channel series, which ended in Jan. 2011. The casting of Lovato marks the first addition to the show since Cory Monteith’s death in July.

During the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly said Monteith’s character, Finn Hudson, will be written out of the series in the third episode of the season.

“Cory’s character will be written off and [it] will deal directly with drug addiction and the circumstances surrounding Cory’s death,” Reilly said.

Fox denied requests for further comment. Representatives for Demi Lovato did not respond to requests for comment.

“Glee” will return on Sept. 26 with the first of the two part Beatles tribute. The show will go on hiatus after the Oct. 10 Cory Monteith episode airs.
