Anyone familiar with Chicago?

My husband's birthday is this week and we are heading to Chicago for a wedding - anyone have a restaurant recommendation or a fun activity to recommend so that we can celebrate while away?

Re: Anyone familiar with Chicago?

I lived there for 12 years, just moved out of state last month.

Check out Navy Pier for sure, lots to see and eat/drink there.

The view from the top of the Hancock building is awesome. Take the elevator up to the Signature lounge (95th floor, I think) and you only have to purchase a drink to stay there. The view is AMAZING!

As far as eating, I think the best deep dish pizza is at Giordano's. Yummers. My other fave restaurants in the city are Hugo's Frog Bar, Devon Seafood Grill and Carnival. Frontera Grill is supposed to be amazing, but we never went because they wont take a reservation and DH hates waiting for food. lo

Hope you have fun!l

Gibsons steak house is awesome ($$$ but great). Lux Cafe is also really good.
I loved the architectural boat tour. There's the Willis Tower (used to be the Sears Tower), Grant Park and Millenial Park (the "bean" is fun)

It's been a few years, but last time DH and I went we rented bikes, which they have these spots all over, and rode along Lake Michigan. It was awesome!
Also check out Sears Tower, or whatever it's called now. LOL
The famous fountain at the park is nice.
Also, go get a drink at Hancock Tower. You don't need reservations just to go to the bar area.

Riding bikes along Lake Michigan was fun too. Also did a bicycle tour of the city that was interesting.

And yes, Hancock Tower for a drink is really nice!

Re: Anyone familiar with Chicago?

My best friend lives there... I went to visit her recently and we went to a bunch of good places. We ate at RPM Italian (which is apparently owned by Guilana and Bill Rancic) the first night. We had brunch at JAM in Logan Square which was great. We had dinner at Perennial Virant, which I would highly recommend. We also went to the rooftop cocktail bar (in the same hotel) beforehand which was fun with great views. We also had deep dish at Giordano's, which is a fun (and very filling) experience. I know from my friend that other very popular spots are the Girl and the Goat, Little Goat Diner, and Alinea. She has been to all of them and raved about them. Have fun!

I want to give a caveat to Navy Pier. Its nice to walk on, but there is not THAT much to see. In my experience it was cool to walk all the way to the end, but all the "vendors" are people selling their boat trips. Its a nice walk, but don't go out of your way for it.Lots of food vendors. And there were some restaurants there.

We were kind of 'eh' about the Navy Pier. Restaurants were chains or chain-esque, not really unique. It was kind of like a mall. Several years ago we did a boat tour that went down the river and out onto the lake- those were some great views. I think we also took a boat from the Aquarium back to the city, but that was also a long time ago.

I also love the Art Institute. I will never get tired of the Thorne Miniature Rooms. Chat Icon

Re: Anyone familiar with Chicago?

I live in Chicago and would recommend going to Little Goat Diner. It's owned by Top Chef Stephanie Izard. It has great diner food at reasonable prices. There's also a cafe and bread shop next door that you can also get stuff to go. She also owns Girl and the Goat, which has a crazy reservation wait list. I did hear that you can go to the restaurant and put yourself on the list without a reservation. Depending on when you go you can get a table in 20-30 mins.

The architectural boat tour is a great way to see the city along Lake Michigan and Chicago river and learn about the city's history.

If you do try Bongo Room, don't go to the one in the South Loop the service and food us just not that great. Don't know why but the location up north is better.

Mag Mile is great for shopping, then go up to Hancock building for drinks at the Signature Room (95th Floor). Has a great view of the city.

I think you mean Gino's East. There's also Giordano's, which is favorite place for Chicago Style deep dish pizza.
