This is not a question, not up for debate, not negotiable.
Your family's attitude about this actually frightens me, and I'd be skeptical about letting them care for my DC if I weren't around!

This shouldn't even be an issue...at 2 years old regardless of size he SHOULD be in a car seat.
You are 1000% right. I would never even consider the advice of whoever told you he can sit in the back with a seatbelt...clearly they have no idea about car seat laws.

You are not being over cautious AT ALL..... I tend to be a car seat fanatic. my seats stay rear facing till 40 lbs. My twins will be 2 soon and I have no intention to switch them till they are close to 40lbs. people say im crazy all the time. When it comes down to it I just tell them that I couldn't live with myself if something happened and I could have avoided it.

Exactly! This is non-negotiable. It is illegal for your 2yo to NOT be in a car seat.
Are your relatives older?
DH has a younger brother who is 10 years his junior. he clearly remembers his brother NOT being in a car seat in the 90's.

You're not crazy they are! Its the law, its a safety issue. I cannot even believe someone would suggest for a child to ride without a carseat that is sooooooo crazy too me!

Breaking the law - the best case scenario is you get away with it.
Not so great scenario - you get tickets & have to scramble for car seat.
Worst case scenario - well you know the worst case scenario.
You are not being paranoid!
I had a friend that flew into Orlando in the middle of the day for a wedding & was killed when a minivan crossed the dividing line. It's not an option for me.
Bring a car seat on the plane & check it.

Absolutely not! There is no way in HELLLLL I would ever let my child- big for their age or not- ride in a car for even a block- unless they were in an approved child seat.
You are not the crazy one- your family who suggested it are!
Not to mention- it's illegal.
Holy CRAP!! You would think in this day and age people would know better!
this and my almost 2.5 DD is stilll rear facing in her car seat!!! no way would she ever ride in a car without one

I wouldn't even humor down the block. Accidents happen anywhere, those are your kids & no one should make you feel protecting them is wrong....they are the crazy ones to think it's no big deal!
