Depends on where you go. In Aruba carseats are not required. I happen to find a taxi driver that does have one and we use him every year. Once we get to the timeshare we don't leave the area. Everything is in walking distance.
The first year when DS was 9 months old I had him in the baby bjorn and put my seatbelt on.
Sometimes some cabs don't even have seatbelts so you never know.

We usually bring ours and rent a car but, we have not travelled outside of the country yet.

I didn't bring one because we stayed in DR... Trip from airport to hotel was 15 mins and we held her on our lap. If I knew I'd be renting a car, I'd see if the rental company could supply one first before bringing my own... Too much stuff to carry around as it is!

Please please please...bring a carseat or be sure to travel in a cab with a carseat.
Accidents can happen anytime--even on a short ride with the safest driver. It is the best way too keep your child safe. Well worth the minor inconvenience of carrying the seat.

Yes-we just came back from Barbados w/our 5 month old. I used the carseat in the taxi to JFK; then we used the taxi in all the cabs we used. Even rented a car one day and we used the car seat. We have a stroller that just has a frame that the car seat clicks into so we brought that with us and it was so easy to just click the car seat into it and walk around.
In regards to the cabs not having seat belts. Yes that's true. But we had several occasions where we had to let cabs go by until one came that had seat belts. And in fact; seat belts that locked (some the straps were just long and stretched out there was no way to secure the car seat)
ETA: It wasn't even that much extra stuff to carry even at the airport. I wore DS through security and we just threw all the extra things we had in our hands in the stroller until we got to the gate and collapsed it.
Not knowing we carried our Car seat base with us; but in all the cabs we just installed the seat with the base. When we rented the car we realized it had the latch system so we used the base for the day we had the car rental.

Last time we went to FL we rented. It was very expensive though. I could have bought one there for the price. This time with 2 kids we are bringing them. Most airlines let u check them for free!

Oh yea I forgot to mention that. We were able to check it for free (at the gate). We checked the car seat; stroller and car seat base all for free. (I bought bags to keep everything clean)

I agree! I would never not have one! I just didn't know if it would be easier to rent one with a rental car or bring ours.

I agree! I would never not have one! I just didn't know if it would be easier to rent one with a rental car or bring ours.
I've done both. Won't rent again unless an absolute necessity.
The seats weren't too clean, straps were twisted, parts not attached correctly. I looked at every seat they had and still had to do a little tweaking.
They usually have Cosco seats.
