anatomy scan disappointment ~ wwyd?
i had my anatomy scan on friday. i made it VERY clear i did not want to know the sex of the baby. i found out with my son and really wanted to experience the "surprise" this time around. well ~ the tech blew it.
she had me turn my head/close my eyes when she was checking. when that part was over, she was showing me the 4 chambers of the heart and she somehow switched screens and there clear as day at the top of the screen read the sex of the baby with exclamation points and everything. she switched off the screen quickly and it suddently felt uncomfy. i didnt say a thing but we both knew what just happened. i think i was in utter shock because im still surprised i didnt say "umm...did i see what i think i saw?"
i left the office and went to the car and cried like a lunatic. i called my dh and cried to him - never telling him what the sex was. he told me to go back in and tell them what happened. i did but what was anyone going to do - i cant "unknow" what i know.
ive spent the weekend being pretty upset and cant help but recognize that hormones are probably playing a big part in my feelings. typically stuff like this rolls off my back. i still havent told a soul the sex of the baby and have gotten used to the idea of it being a "secret" between me and my baby. i plan on going the next 22 weeks keeping it to myself.
so - the question is - can i demand to not have this woman be my sono tech when i go for my next sono? im so pissed off at her! she is a nice lady and i dont want her to lose her job or anything but i dont even want to see her! i feel like she robbed me! my docs office uses an outside company to do these - the woman comes to my docs office and just does sonograms - but i dont want her touching me. has anyone had something like this happen to them? how did you deal? what demands can i make as a patient if its not people within my docs office doing these sonos?
help!

Omg! I'm so sorry that happened to you! I'm team green also and would be so upset if that happened to me. Do they have another tech there on a different day that you could go to?

ughh wow that really stinks, I'm really sorry the tech wasn't more careful. You would think she would be used to that kind of request and there would be a protocol set up so this kind of situation doesn't happen. It's not like asking to not find out the sex is some odd unreasonable request.
As far as using her again, they are providing a service to you. You don't have to let anyone perform a sono on you if you don't feel comfortable- same goes for doctors. it's YOUR body- it just may require working around their schedule and coming on different days, etc.

You can ask not to use her again- I don't think she'll get in trouble for it so not to worry about that. Do what makes you comfortable. Hopefully your schedule works with another Sono techs.
Sorry to hear your gender reveal was not as expeccted but congrats on secret surprise!

the office manager was very sympathetic but what could she really do? the milk was spilled at that point.
the sono company is an outside company - so its not even like the tech works under her or the doctor. even if she did - i couldnt "unknow" what i knew. i also dont think the tech was deliberately careless but none the less she was.
it also didnt help that i had been crying, so i think i looked like a wreck and i had my 2 yr old with me who was hanging on my neck the whole time i was explaining what happened.
i think i went back in just to let them know i was mad. i didnt expect they could do anything.

I'm sorry this happened! It's a big decision to stay team green(at least it would be for me) so it's such a disappointment to have that taken away from you. On a different note, how did the rest of the scan go? I hope the baby looks healthy

I'm so sorry that this happened to you- happened to a friend of mine last year as well- doctor spilled the beans. I would definitely not want that sono tech again- don't blame you there

I'm so sorry.....I can't imagine how disappointed you feel. I would feel exactly the same way.
I wouldn't want to see her again....it would just bring back all the anger and disappointment you're feeling now.

I'm so sorry that happened to you!! I'm an adamant team green girl so I would be LIVID if someone blew it and did this to me!!! If I were you I would mention it to the doctor's office and say you'd prefer she's not scheduled for any of your other sonos. I know if I had the same tech again I wouldn't be able to control myself, I'd probably drop some F bombs on her LOL.

yes ~ in the big picture ~ im growing a healthy baby ~ 2 parts of the brain, 4 chambers in the heart, 2 arms, 2 legs, 5 fingers, etc. and that is what really matters. ive reminded myself of this continually since the beans spilled. i have to focus on the positive.

I'm so sorry that your surprise was ruined. I'm also really shocked that the tech would even write in "It's a _______" I thought that was for the parents, not the doctor and knowing that you wanted to be  she shouldn't have written in anything!! Either way it shouldn't have happened and I would definitely ask not to be scanned by that tech again.

First of all why would they write the gender with exclamation points unless you wanted to know. I find that strange. That really sucks. I'm sorry that happened to you. I understand a technical difficulty such as clicking on the wrong screen accidentally but I just dont get what the point of typing out the gender would be? Isnt that usually done for the purpose of the parent? It wouldn't be for the doctor's reference- I would think a doctor would be able to tell by looking at the photo. I would definitely make a huge stink about it. You wanted that moment in the hospital and she took that away from you. Totally unacceptable.

Why would she even make note of the sex?!?! It doesn't make any sense- if you didn't want to know to even put it in a chart.
I'm so sorry that happened to you- I think you can totally request a different tech!
ETA: ARe you SURE that was what you were seeing? It couldn't possibly be someone else's scan, could it??
I'm just trying to understand why she would write that?!

I agree..I find that very strange...any chance it could be a pic from the person she previously scanned? did you see your name at the top?

OMG! I do not even know what I would do! Try to push it out of your mind, maybe HOPEFULLY it wasn't even the gender! Maybe it was from another person (who was just finding out the gender for the first time). I am so so so sorry and I do not think its crazy to request a different person, like you said - its not like you want her to get fired, you just shouldnt have to deal with her again!

Im so srry! This is my fear as a team green mom too! I would be upset as well, and let the office know I dont want that tech to do anymore sonos on me, since they do the scheduling.

Ugh! I am so sorry that happened to you! We made it all the way to the night I was admitted to the hospital in labor. The nurse then said to me "So you know you're having a boy..." and I said "Nope, didn't know that...but now I do." I wanted to punch her out! Hang in there..so sorry the surprise was blown

(sorry i still havent told anyone the sex!) but it wasnt written as a medical term at all. it even had exclamation points after the word!
now i know what i saw but i did find out the sex with my son and they didnt write a thing on the pics ~ but i know im not crazy.
basically - curiosity may kill this cat now because when i have the next sono i can either choose to believe i may have not have saw what i saw OR i can ask and confirm.

If you do decide to get another sonogram to get confirmation on the sex, perhaps you should take your husband.
The reason why I didn't want to go Team Green is because I am afraid of exactly what happened to you. When I read your post, I felt badly because your husband wasn't there with you. At least if the tech was going to expose the sex, I would like my husband to be right by my side.

i know what i saw but i am confused because i agree with all of your points. when i found out with my son they didnt write anything on the picture and you are correct - why do they need to document the sex? isnt it irrelevant to them??
could it be someone elses scan?? i dont know why someone elses pics would be up on a screen while im in the middle of the sono - but is it possible??
im asking because i feel like im at a cross road.. either curiosity is going to get the better of me and ill have to confirm what i saw OR i can move forward saying maybe it was a mistake/didnt read it/ not possible. ??? im more confused now than anything.
