I was one of those "negative" responses. I despise when people ask "does this make me a bad parent?" when they know FULL WELL they aren't. Like the OP really thinks she's the ONLY ONE who thinks her kids should take a break and enjoy summer?? Guess it just struck a nerve for me and I actually posted in response rather than rolling my eyes and moving on as I do 99.9% of the time.
Let it go, you misinterpreted her post and just read into it too much. I really don't believe she had a hidden soapbox agenda. She was just concerned that she wasn't doing enough work with her children over the summer, in comparison to what she has been hearing other parents are doing.

Re: Am I the only one? Does this make me a bad parent?
I ask myself am I a bad parent for doing this all the time...
I ask bc I have a question, not looking for validation or that I am fully aware of the answer
Parenting is hard and I can tell u the biggest struggle I have found is hearing comments and judgements from other people
I am pregnnat with twins...oh are they natural? Scheduled c section...oh u did not even want a natural birth?? Why not? Not team green...oh u r missing the best surprise Formula fed...u didn't try breast feeding, don't u want what's best for them U r not making your own food?...u know all the crap in store food
And it goes both ways for the opposite of what we chose to
My point is sometimes when u don't do what the popular choice of what's around u, you do question am I doing something wrong ..am I a bad parent
I struggle with this every single day
That is where a question like this comes from, not a soapbox
Op I'm sorry for the nasty responses u got

OP - To answer your question. You're not alone. I also believe that kids need a break and summer should be a time to really relax a little more, spend quality time with your kids and family, and engage in fun activities without the stress of formal learning.
That being said, should either my DS or DD struggle in any particular area as they go through school I will naturally work with them on those skills over the summer to ensure their success the follow year and to avoid too much regression while school is out. I'm sure every parent would do the same.
But in the meantime, I like to keep learning fun with my DD. As a former teacher I can't help but to interject certain concepts or ideas while DD and I are playing together but it's never in an "in your face", formal lesson kind of way. It's more like while we bake cookies I introduce the idea of measurement. While we read together I might help her to sound out a word with me. While we're driving we look out for different shapes or colors. It's fun things that keep reinforcing important skills or concepts without being too "teachy".
Enjoy your summer and don't sweat anything!!

Ok seriously? You call me narrow-minded for ASSUMING that I think playing and learning are 2 completely different things. You more than twisted my words.
I'll tell you what. Before I post anything, I'll send you an FM, and you can edit it before I put it up. Since clearly my post did not meet you standards. Would that help?

Thank you. It's almost like "keeping up with the Joneses", n but parenting. So much pressure to do the best for your kid, and if you fall short, you are judged. And you judge yourself.

Let it go? Uh, okay (let what go? 2 posts in this 3 page thread? ) And FWIW, I don't think I misinterpreted anything.
Look, Im not here to argue with you. But when you're wrong, say you're wrong. The OP as well as everyone else has said that you misunderstood what she was saying and maybe took it to heart over something personal in your life. These things happen, but instead of being nasty, what;s the harm instead of saying, "Hey, sorry, I misunderstood."

Re: Am I the only one? Does this make me a bad parent?
I agree that learning is fun for them. My stepmom use to get leftover worksheets from our teachers at the end of the school year and we'd play school over the Summer. It was fun! I'm not giving my kids homework but I will be giving them age appropriate challenges to work on and we'll have fun doing it.

Yes, seriously.
I'm sorry that your post fell into the .1%. I will admit I should have just rolled my eyes to myself and moved on, as I most often do.
If you TRULY posted what you did due to an insecurity, well then I hope you feel validated now in knowing that you are not the single parent out there who doesn't do flash cards and drill their kid over the summer. Neither do I, just for the record.
I do feel validated. Thank you.
I hope your life gets better, since clearly you must have some unresolved issue.

I think this is what it is. It is keeping up with the joneses and if you don't yo are considered a bad parent.
I guess I am # 1 bad parent and my ds will end up in jail because I don't teach him all the time he was ff and store non organic food. Eats Kraft and fast food.
And you know what. I love it!!!! I live out life and the way we do things. So if other bad parents want to come hang out. We don't judge what you do. Just be fun!!!!

am I the only one at this thread?? lol.
I don't see anything wrong with what the OP asked. I think it depends a lot on the child, my DC is young now but depending on his needs and abilities will determine how much work we do over the summer. I don't think the OP said education wasn't important, simply asking how much others do.
I had zero issue with the OP. and didn't see the need for snarkiness
seriously. Some people have a huge chip on their shoulder. She was just asking a question, what is wrong with it I do NOT know. OP just enjoy your summer with your kids and don't worry what everyone else is doing or not doing. You do what you think is the right thing for you and your kids

OP.... Welcome to LIF
To actually answer your question, I'm an educator and I do very little extra work with DS, who will be in first grade in the fall. We read together every night, and he'll be going to a week of marine biology camp over the summer. Mostly we go away, camp, see music, visit family, and maybe do a museum trip or 2, on top of hiking and beach. We keep it laid back and fun on weekends and time off from school.

Gina- you can start a whole thread about this. It's very true about when we go against the grain, we develop personal insecurities.
I suspect the OP believes she is doing what is best, but feels insecure, so she is looking for validation. I totally get that.
