breastfeeding: dirty diapers during week 1
my dd is 5 days old and my milk just came in prob last night. she had dirty diaper last night but then not all day today. when should i get concerned?
we went to the ped today and she started gaining again (up 2oz from tues). and she has enough wet diapers. im just hoping to see more dirty diapers. any insight?

breastfeeding: dirty diapers during week 1
Breastfed babies can go up to 4 days without pooping. They tend to poop less than their formula fed counterparts because their bodies use nearly every component in the breastmilk, so there is very little waste that their bodies need to get rid of. No need for worry unless she is not gaining well, or is straining to poop and/or pooping hard balls, indicating she is constipated. My boys were both exclusively breastfed and my older son was totally regular since the day he was born, pooping multiple times each day. My younger son, as an infant pooped about once every 4-5 days. All within the normal range though!

Dirty and wet diapers are a good indication of if they are getting enough, but so is their disposition - if DD seems content and quiet and sleeps well then she is likely getting enough. Also, your boobs should feel full before a feeding and then she feel softer after a feeding.
It is so hard not to worry - even as a second time mom who EBF DD1 until 15 months I still worry that DD2 isn't getting enough! But stress can affect your supply, so try to relax!

The opposite also happens... so I disagree w/ this from my experience, but every baby is diff. Mine pooped 6-7 times a day, and docs tell me that this is the typical for breastfed babies b/c breastmilk is essentially a laxative. Very quickly digested so a lot goes through the system, which is part of the reason they eat more than formula fed babies. As long as baby is peeing a few diapers a day and seems comfy, I wouldn't be concerned. Also, don't be surprised if poops and their consistencies change over time, even if you are still nursing exclusively. It's all normal w/ age.

My EBF DD will go through spurts of a lots of dirty diapers and then one every 2/3 days. It's normal for BF babies. I told the ped yesterday that she hasn't gone in 3 days (not concerned just informing him) and he wasn't concerned as long as she's not straining to poo or in pain. She ended up going last night.
FYI - When she goes, she really goes! All over - keep an extra set of clothes in the diaper bag and treat the stains right away (cold water soak and stain treater).
