I'm so itchy
Anyone ever just feel like they are scratching off their skin? I cannot get comfortable. I had a hard time sleeping last night b/c I was literally scratching all over.
Is this a normal pregnancy occurrence? I can't take this...
thinking of taking some benedryl right before bed tonight.

Re: I'm so itchy
I felt like that around my 4th month and the dr. said that our skin can be super sensitive so he had me change the soap I was using, but he said to let him know if that didn't work. Thank God it did...I also changed my deodorant to Toms of Maine.

I would DEFINITELY tell your doctor... There is a pregnancy issue and now I can't think of what it is called but it has to do with your liver that actually CAUSES you to get REALLY itchy. Your doctor might want to run some bloodwork to make sure that you don't have that... My old coworker had it and they actually were going to induce her.

This is true. It's from the bile salts. But there would be other symptoms. Like gallbladder pain.

Re: I'm so itchy
This happened to me and my dr said it is very common since your skin is stretching. I would put cocoa butter cream on my belly to relieve the itch.

Re: I'm so itchy
call your doctor - there is something called PUPS that can be serious. it has to do with itching of the skin. (dont remember much about it but they had to make sure i didnt have it)
i had horribly itchy skin - baby oil helped me. i continued to use it for years after i gave birth. as soon as you turn off the water in the shower - douse yourself with baby oil and rub it in all over. pat dry and go. it helped my skin itch so much and its inexpensive.
good luck!

Re: I'm so itchy
Thanks everyone. I'm seriously going crazy scratching. The scratching is basically on the back of my shoulders and arms. I do not have a rash so I don't think it is PUPPS. I'll call my dr. tomorrow to see if they want to see me again, of course I was just there yesterday morning

Even if you don't have a gallbladder??? (I had mine removed 10 years ago, lol.) I don't remember my coworker having any other symptoms other than the itch - so I couldn't speak to the pain, but I definitely remember us discussing the bile salts issue. Now that you mention the gallbladder thing, I am definitely going to do some research to see if I'm at an increase risk since I had mine removed...

This is not 100% true. What you are talking about is upper right quadrant pain and not everyone with cholestasis gets this.itching can sometimes be the only symptom.
I just delivered my 2nd cholestasis baby.
Pupps would come with a rash Cholestasis- no rash (unless created from itching) The itching can be all over but intense on feet and palms. Usually ( not always) starting in 3rd trimester Def do some research on it and talk to your dr bc there are serious risks to baby such as still birth. I had to have my baby by 37 weeks

Re: I'm so itchy
Thanks so much for the information, I did some research last night. I'm having twins which seems to increase the likelihood of developing this. I'll definitely call my dr. this morning.

Re: I'm so itchy
Of course check with your doc like everyone said.
If it is just a side effect of PG, hormones, etc. then try Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I had itchy skin - well, legs mostly - just itchy legs. And once doc checked it out and made sure it wasn't anything serious, just one of the lovely side effects of pregnancy, he suggested Extra Virgin Olive Oil in the shower.
So, you go in there with a good quality EVOO, MAKE SURE YOU PUT A TOWEL ON THE SHOWER FLOOR!!! IT GETS MAD SLIPPERY Anywho, just rub it all over yourself, I really targeted my legs, let it sit for a few minutes, and then wash off with warm water -- not too hot and not cold - just warm. You can even use it in your hair, it's a great natural deep conditioner.
But it was amazing!!!! And my skin glowed and was soft for at least a week or so until I felt I needed to do it again - of course, I showered in between like normal HTH!
