What foods should I be feeding my 1 year old?

I know I am behind with giving my DD real food. She has had some things like cooked carrots, apples and scrambled eggs but she really loves her baby food. I can't lie...I'm also petrified of her choking. What are some foods that are good to give? What is your one year old's eating schedule like?

Re: What foods should I be feeding my 1 year old?

by one year, DC were on 3 square meals.

Breakfast - pancakes, yogurt, fruit, cheerios, waffles, eggs

Lunch - grilled cheese, quesadillas, low sodium soup (but with the liquid drained out), veggie burgers, pasta

Dinner - whatever we are having

With that said with my first I was PETRIFIED of DC choking. I would actually have to leave the room and leave DH during meals bc I would freak out over every cough. So I feel your pain. I cut up DC food SO SO tiny that there was NO way DC could choke. I know how scary that can be.

First, to ease my fears DH and I took an infant/child first aid class so god forbid anything happened, I would know what to do. Secondly, it gets easier, MCUH easier. With each subsequent child, I was way more relaxed. My youngest by the time they were 15mons-ish, I would give them full pieces to just chow down on and takes bites of which I would have NEVER done with my first.

I bet your DC will surprise you, and again, to ease your fears cut up the food SUPER SUPER tiny and gradually increase the size when you feel comfortable doing so.

My DD is only 8 months old, but I just wanted to say you are not alone. I am also petrified of her choking, even more so AFTER I took infant CPR. I've just been giving her purees so far and feel she will be eating that for a long time. I agree with just give her super soft, super tiny pieces until you feel she can handle more.

I do real foods at 15 months. Whatever we are eating. Of course, I chop it all up. Today, we ate grilled chicken, asparagus and okra. Yesterday, meatloaf and roasted fennel.

Made the transition over when she stopped eating baby food at about 13 to 14 months.

DD will be one in a week! She loves things she can pick up and bite into. Some things she won't eat if I cut them up too small.

Breakfast is typically a waffle cut into strips with half a banana or blueberries. She'll also eat pancakes, french toast, scrambled egg, toast, muffins, kiwi, cantaloupe, pineapple.

Lunch is usually a yogurt pouch or sometimes a fruit and veggie pouch bc she eats so late and I'm usually in a rush to get out. If we have more time she'll have crackers, hard boiled eggs, cold cuts, fruit or veggies, open faced grilled cheese.

Dinner is often leftovers from the night before. Baked chicken, meatballs, meatloaf, pasta, rice, and steamed veggies. I've made her homemade chicken nuggets and keep some in the freezer for when I need something. Also the Dr.Praeger's fish nuggets make for an easy backup meal. She loves her veggies so I usually get her to eat as much meat as I can, then give her a little carbs if she's having them, and then save her veggies for last. She loves, loves, loves peas so I always have a lot in the freezer and just defrost some at the end of almost every dinner.

She doesn't do a whole lot of snacking bc I feel like she's constantly eating/nursing as it is. I do give her a snack cup of cheerios or puffs sometimes in the afternoon.

As far as choking, I watch her closely when she's having anything bigger (like strips of waffle or chicken) but she's been really good. So far the only thing she's choked on is water!

At 12m I had DS on table food. Tt was whatever we were eating. I would start it out in smal pieces but actually found h liked holding onto things so I had to go to bigger pieces.

In the beginning switching from purees to table food was tough. He refused to eat some meals. I refused to go back to the purees. IMO the longer they are on the purees the harder it is going to be to switch.

at 12 months they were eating everything that we ate. pasta, rice, cheese, all veggies, beans and all fruit. Then they were eating meat, not so much anymore.

Might sound crazy but I never gave my dd baby food. From 7 months on, she was eating whatever we ate... Yes, I was paranoid about choking in the beginning... I still am but I know what she can handle for the most part now. Ironically the only thing she has truly choked on was Cheerios! I think she shoveled too many in her mouth at a time. Take the time to learn CPR and you'll feel more confident.

As for a menu, morning is usually oatmeal or a banana (which she can eat about 3/4 of Chat Icon

Lunch is either leftovers, pastina with ricotta, grilled cheese, etc. My dd isn't a fan of yogurt so I rarely give that.

Dinner is whatever we're eating. Chicken, steak, pork chops... you name it, she eats it! Thank god! Lol

Were now down to 3 bottles a day! Woohoo!!!

And for snacks, she'll have puffs and fruit.

Thank you all for your responses. I know that I really need to get moving with this and try to put my fears aside for her sake. Is there a specific portion size I should stick to or will she tell me when she's had enough?

For breakfast, do you make your own waffles, pancakes and muffins or use the frozen/store bought ones for adults? When do they start to get juice?

Sorry, I'm just so clueless.

I just start with smaller portions and if he eats it all I give more. You will learn what they want.

I use frozen waffles and frech toast sticks. Make my own pancakes.

You can give juice whenever. I started before a year but I always water it down.

We decided on not doing juice, but I believe you can start it whenever. My twins drink milk and water. I didn't see the need for the empty calories. As for the breakfast foods, we use the frozen, for the connivence. They eat eggs, fruit and waffles every morning. I couldn't imagine cooking the waffles along with the eggs. Muffins I make a head of time.

I haven't given juice. I don't see a need for it. I give frozen whole grain waffles since they're really easy. I will make pancakes, french toast, and sometimes waffles from scratch. I just try to make 2-3 days worth so that it's more worth the effort.
