Question Re: Gun Control & NRA
Does the NRA have a legitimate reason to be against background checks?

Question Re: Gun Control & NRA
IMO, no, but I'm also very in favor of stronger gun control and against armed volunteers in schools. They say criminals will never submit to them. I do agree with this- but then it makes it harder for them to get guns.
Anyway, they don't represent people, they represent the gun makers.

I have to agree.
From what I can gather from people who I know who are against it, they say it makes them feel like a criminal for exercising their 2nd amendment rights.
Personally, I disagree with that sentiment- it can really be applied anywhere... to the cashier at McDonald's checking my $20 bill to make sure it's real to airport security checks. A little caution can go a long way.
I also fully support a 24 hour wait after purchasing a gun to actually get it. So many crimes are done in the heat of the moment, I think that would make a notable difference.
ETA: Another thing is... if you have nothing to hide... then why are you upset by a background check? Or if you don't need to go out and bust a cap immediately, how is this 24 hour hold negatively affecting you? Short answer, it's not.

This is my exact thought and I can't understand why ANYONE would be against this.
Of course it wouldn't help in situations like the one in Thoms River, NJ- where the 4 yr old got a hold of his father's rifle and accidentally shot his 6 yr old friend. That could only be helped with random checks on gun owners to be sure they are keeping their guns properly stored (which would cost our Govn't too much money...)
I don't know that there is an answer for any of this.

Re: Question Re: Gun Control & NRA
They used to be in favor of background checks.
Politifact
On May 27, 1999, LaPierre testified before the House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Crime. The Columbine High School shooting, in which 12 high school students and one teacher were murdered, had happened a month earlier.
To rebut what he saw as a demonization of the NRA and its members, LaPierre listed a number of actions and laws he said were good policy.
First on that list:
"We think it's reasonable to provide mandatory instant criminal background checks for every sale at every gun show. No loopholes anywhere for anyone," he said. "That means closing the Hinckley loophole so the records of those adjudicated mentally ill are in the system. This isn't new, or a change of position, or a concession. I've been on record on this point consistently, from our national meeting in Denver, to paid national ads and position papers, to news interviews and press appearances."
He also spoke in favor of preventing juvenile felons from ever owning guns, setting up instant background checks at gun shows and keeping schools gun-free.

The only reason I can think of is if you were concerned over the right to privacy. I'm sure conspiracists would be against them.

I understand that. And if the government was talking about stopping people on the side of the road and doing a background check randomly, I'd agree with them. But no one NEEDS a gun in America, at least I can't see a reason why someone would NEED one. So I look at it as its completely voluntary that one would buy a gun and submit themselves to a background check.
