Witness and Matron of Honor
Is there a difference? My friend asked me twice to be her matron of honor (town of hall wedding with small lunch to follow). I just heard from another friend that she asked her and her dh to be her witnesses. Is this different?
P.S. this has been going on for 2 years now and we are pretty sure there never will be a wedding bit was just curious.

witness is who signs the marriage license. i think its common that the MOH is also the witness, but there is no rule to that.

I didn't have my MOH as my witness. I actually never heard of that association until this post. I considered them 2 separate "honors".
I had my step-mom sign as the witness as i didnt really have anything special for her to do besides that.

i was the "best man" for my friends wedding and he had his other friend as a witness to sign the marriage license. it was a way to honor her as well. when i got married my sister was my MOH and signed my ketubah. so it can go either way.

I never heard of it being 2 separate things. Our MOH and Best Man signed our marriage license.

Re: Witness and Matron of Honor
We had friends who were not in our wedding party, but who we still wanted to honor, sign our civil license and our Ketubah (Jewish marriage license). It gave us a way of honoring 4 more people.

I was told the witness who signs the license can't be a blood relative.

Agreed! My sister and DH's uncle signed for me and DH. I was told that my ketubah could not be my sisters though. I had my best female cousin (also a bridesmaid) and my close male cousin (not a groomsmen but a way to honor him).
