Then people would actually HAVE to parent their child. Its easier to pay the ***** to stay off the computer.
Man, things sure have changed. My mom would have thrown my computer out the window before she PAID me to get off it.

What is going to stop her from creating a new account for herself during this time that he doesn't know about? I know lots of people who have 2 accounts (like me) for personal & professional use...

I think it's dumb. She can't get a babysitting job so she offered to stop using FB for money?

Re: Father Gives Daughter $200 to Quit Facebook for Five Months
Maybe I'm the only one, but I like it. I like that it was HER idea and it actually says that she was trying to get babysitting jobs and was having no luck. But honestly, I think ANYTHING that gets any kid off the computer and outside doing things is a good thing. I actually would have made that an added stipulation. Just because you're not on facebook doesn't mean you get to sit there and play on pinterest all day long. Sure, it's sad that you have to resort to bribery, but let's be real, if my job didn't pay me, I sure as sh!t wouldn't show up... isn't that bribery?

I say whatever works. If this situation works for this dad and his kid, god bless them.
The fact that it's being reported on the news? RIDICULOUS.
Not newsworthy.

exactly but oh heaven forbid.. that's like child abuse.. infringement on their freedoms.. torture!
PLEASE! pfft
I made the rules, you follow them, its really that simple. This house is not a democracy.
ETA: if she is ONLY getting off FB to make money well then NO F'ING WAY! I wont pay you to do something just for the sake of doing it. You want money? EARN it! 14, you can still go outside and keep the garden neat, dishes, sweep, mop, vacuum, hell at 14 you can help make dinner. $10 a week? Oh yeah I can FIND you some chores outside your NORMAL (expected to be done for free) chores.
I see no reason to give my kid money like that at all. Are you a straight A's, chores doing, obiedent child? What do you want? I can help you out. But if you have room for improvement anywhere I shouldn't have to pay you a red dime to get off your butt and put in the time.

I must respectfully disagree with this because sure it might be hard for her to find a job, but there are better ways she could "earn" that $200 instead of being off FB.
No babysitting jobs? Well do extra chores around the house.
Go down the street and find out if any elderly neighbors need assistance with things around the house.
Have her go and volunteer somewhere like a soup kitchen or a thrift shop.
Bring her to an animal shelter so she can walk, feed, and care for dogs and cats that need the exercise.
Having her "earn" money by just not doing something instead of having her earn it in an enriching fashion does absolutely nothing for her. It just teaches her that she can manipulate her dad to get money.

Absolutely! He's basically paying his daughter off because he's too lazy to just say NO.

My thing is she probably WILL do those things more if she gets off a computer. I don't know, I look at it this way- I was a very lucky kid- I was an only child for 8 years and , I'll admit, I was spoiled. I never had to do chores but I was always encouraged to go out and do things and enrich myself in other ways- like studying more, pursuing a hobby, or enrolling in a club at school. My parents were very of the mind of "let kids be kids." I appreciated it (maybe not then, but now!) and I work my butt off now as an adult to earn my keep. But to each their own. I stand by it, whatever gets a kid off the computer is good news to me!
ETA: And my house was VERY much a democracy. There was rarely an answer like "Because I said so." I think maybe it made me a stronger person- I certainly don't take "no" for an answer now. I always want to know why and I'm always arguing my point... clearly!

Actually, a job pays you because you bring something to the table. You have a skill, a knowledge base, varied experiences. You're not being bribed to work, you're being compensated for your time, effort, and skill set.
I don't feel that your comparison really makes sense. She's a teenage kid offering nothing. $200 for deactivating her FB acct?? Seriously??!! How is that worthy of compensation???
Speaking as a parent, I can promise you I won't be paying my child to follow the rules of my home. If I tell my DD to do something she's going to do it because I said she has to, not because I paid her. Sorry but I just think its pathetic the way some people cater to their kids and make things soooo easy for them because god forbid they end up disappointed, or upset, or have to hear the word NO. Oh the horror!!!...........a child not getting everything they want and desire. How cruel.
I think it's a totally stupid agreement and he looks like a loser, pushover parent. Paying his DD off so she "listens" and does what he says???? So pathetic. Silly, lazy parenting.

Re: Father Gives Daughter $200 to Quit Facebook for Five Months
I don't think it's so bad. Maybe he just wants to show her all the time she can free up. Sure he can say, "no more fb", but that's a punishment imo and she didn't do anything wrong.
