My DD is Alexis or Alex. My neighbor calls her Lexi. I correct them and they shrug and insist that Lexi is the correct nickname. It annoys me but I love when they call out to her and she doesn't respond!

See this is when I think a person is being rude. If its the parents wishes for you to not call their child by a certain name and they made it clear, then why continue to do it. That is annoying.

In my opinion some names are just meant to have nicknames--and yes I do also think its a term of endearment...but also a person preference...
I never had a nickname--and my name just sounded weird... "a" , or "age" ... I never liked it...so when I named my daughter I pretty much dont want her to have a nickname either!!!
my husband on the other hand --when we were choosing baby names kept thinking about how the names would be shortened... (his name-richard...EVERYONE calls him Rich, including myself,..and his family calls him Richie) so he's use to that...
My cousin's name is Christian...and NO ONE calls him chris...like, not one person. I think his parents never accepted it and he just got use to the fact that thats his name!
My daughters name is Catalina...and maybe one day if her friends in school decide to shorten it (to cat i'm assuming )-it will be out of my hands...until then its Catalina!
(woa didnt mean to write a novel!)
