My 3.5 yr old loves her bitty twins (american girl), leappad (loves the book games and anythinng with letters and spelling, word match games), blocks (wooden and architectural sets), loves these keva blocks (there is an exhibit with them at the LICM now), tea set, any dolls, games (hi ho cherry o, chutes and ladders, domineos, memory, checkers), anything involving cutting and pasting and coloring.
The blocks are really a HUGE hit. She has those small disney princess figurines. She uses the blocks to build cities and houses and does a whole city with bridges, houses, castles etc for her dolls. We have more than one set bc her sister loves to build as well and having more than one set allows her to do really elaborate things. I like the architectural wooden set bc it has columns like in greek temples, arches etc. So she can build things that look like palaces or castles. Also fun to build with friends.
