Would love to hear this too...we will be flying in a few months. I have heard snacks are good to bring and coloring books.
With the DVDs, do you plan on using headphones or just playing them out loud? I don't think my DS could keep headphones on for too long but didn't know if its rude to have the sound heard by everyone.

I do plan on using head phones. I got him kid ones so hopefully he will keep them on we are trying them on in the house for him to get used to them.

I flew with DS at this age.
If you can afford it, buy a separate seat. My DS slept the whole way (we put his carseat in).

I flew with DS at this age - he ended up sitting on a man's lap 2 rows back for half the flight (it was awkward for me but, it was for the good of all the plane lol!)
I brought lots of toys and snacks for him. I had him as a lap child but, it was quite uncomfortable - we flew Spirit and it was tight.
I had gotten earphones for DS as well but, he was more interested in playing with them than wearing them so we usually use the iPad with the volume low on flights.

Re: flying with a 17 month old
I just flew to Seattle with DS who is 2. The IPad was our biggest savior both ways!! I loaded it up with different apps before the trip and he was entertained for a good portion of each flight.
I also had a carry on bag filled with new toys and his favorite toys. Everytime he got fussy or wanted out of his seatbelt (he had his own seat), I would whip out something from the bag.
I bought some new Thomas trains for him, some new books to read, art and craft projects like stamp set, foam stickers and glue stick, coloring books, toy trucks, sticker book, snacks, treats like a lollipop or bag of fruit snacks etc.
People and the airline crew complimented us on his behavior on both flights.
I was so proud of him, but I know it was becuase we kept him occupied every second, he didn't have time to think about crying or whining because I would pull something out of my magic bag
