Those who've relocated...

How did you cope? I'm having a really difficult time adjusting. I was really sad in the beginning but was distracted by discovering this new place but now it's really hit me like a ton of bricks. I really miss my family, my friends, my old life...I feel so alone. Chat Icon I don't even have 1 friend!

I don't have any advice for you....this is one of my biggest fears about relocating which is why I won't do it. I live about 1.5 hours away from my family...and I really don't have too many friends out here either (I think just recently I actually have made a few). Some are from work...1 is actually an LIF poster who I met on LIW and she moved to the next town over from where I am in NJ.

I would think keeping in touch via this site, or with friends/family online, by phone will help you get through your adjustment period. You could also browse the real estate websites...and smile at the fact that you have a beautiful brand-new home, that would probably be virtually impossible to have here on LI due to the prices Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I can relate 100% as we just did the same thing. It is very lonely and I am hoping things will get better soon. Where did you move to?

Re: Those who've relocated...

i guess for me, i have been so overwhelmed with the excitement of my new job, new house, unpacking, exploring the area, etc. that i have been happier than ever.

(we are also not THAT far away, we still see family every few weeks. - still havn't seen our friends yet, but I havn't really missed going out to the same old bars and stuff with them)

maybe my situation is different, but its been a very positive one for us in every way.

hope things get better - definitely try exploring the area more, taking drives, checking out new stores - shopping is always good! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Those who've relocated...

I moved away from my family two weeks after my 18th birthday but when dh and i moved to LI it was the first time he had been further than 2 blocks from his mom!! He has been the one adjusting to his new surroundings and all...I was away at school for 4 years then moved to NY, it is very lonely at first but I still talk to my childhood friends who live in the same town we grew up in so I catch up on all the gossip.

Best wishes on your new home (apt, condo, house...) and I am sure you will meet ppl and enjoy your new town! If dh can do it....anyone can! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Those who've relocated...

I relocated last year to CT. It has been a big adjustment for me as well and there have been many times when I have felt lonely. My neighbors are not friendly people and we've only seen them a handful of times in the year and a half that we've been here. I've made friends at work. My advice would be to join a local gym or see if your town has some kind of group for the newbies in town. Good luck!

Re: Those who've relocated...

I moved from Ireland to here when I was 18. Now I am moving from NY to VA. I am afraid that once the novelty of living in a new place wears off that I am going to be very sad and lonely. I remember being home sick when I was 18 but I also felt like I was on vacation.

Re: Those who've relocated...

I think its important to put yourself in places where you will meet people. When I moved to the UK 7 years ago I went to a temp agrncy and they placed me somewhere helping to stuff envelopes, this was my first assignment...well 7 years on I am still working with the same people (3 companies later, the boss took the team with her to other companies) so I quite randomly got a great career and made friends!

Now that I am off on maternity leave I go to lots of baby things...cinema. playgroups, support groups and I have made lots of friends, So I would suggest taking some classes at a craft store, or the gym. Maybe a local college has some cooking classes! don't be afraid to ask someone for their number or email address. Get a cell phone number and send them some texts, I always find that to be the least stalkerish. But don't be afraid to talk to people! For me, my accent always draws attention so people love to talk to me, and I love the attention...so get yourself out there!

I can relate also... I moved in February (about 7 hours from home) and still have not adjusted. Yes we have the beautiful brand new house, but it doesn't exactly make up for the fact that I am extremely lonely, depressed and hating my job here (even though I transferred within the same company - the office here is run VERY differently).

Usually I use retail therapy to make myself feel better (bad, I know), but with the house comes a lot of bills so I haven't been able to do that as much. Our neighbors are nice, thank god, so that aspect has been good at least.

I wish I could say things will get better but for me it has been almost 6 months and I am still sad so... the best I can say is hang in there! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon FM me if you ever need to talk / vent!

Re: Those who've relocated...

Thank you guys for sharing your experiences!
We just moved to Oregon. It's a nice city, peoople are really friendly but I can't help but miss my old life. Like many of you said it was a little easier in the beginning because I did too feel like I was on vacation, now though it's really sunk in and I feel so alone. DH is back on the east coast this week and I don't even have 1 friend to hang out with. It's really rough.

I used to be so shy and moving here has made me come out of my shell. I talk to everyone and am very outgoing. Totally outside of my comfort zone. I even went out last night to a coworkers wifes girls night and I didn't know anyone!

Re: Those who've relocated...

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I've TOTALLY BEEN THERE!!!!

Although it didn't help me not miss my family, what I did was, I decided that I had a clean slate. No one knew me when we moved. I could leave behind whatever pre-conceived perceptions people had about me in NY and make friends and do things I've never done before. It's kind of cheesey, but I looked at it as a new beginning. I just went and did things I never normally would have done, I was more outgoing than I ever would have been before, etc. I really just became someone else. I made SO many friends in such a short time. I went out all the time, I explored Boston when we lived there, etc. I just took more risks and it paid off.
It's hard, I know it is, but you WILL make friends and you WILL find your niche there. Take lots of chances. That's my best advice in terms of making friends and a life for yourself there.
As for missing family, well, I won't dwell on that because I missed my family so much that we ended up moving back to NY. So I'm a bad example for that end of it!Chat Icon

Re: Those who've relocated...

Im nervous about this too because we are moving to Arizona soon( about 9 months). Im trying to tell myself its going to be a new beggining for us and the chance to be who we want to be. I feel like somehow everybody over here has a preconceived notion of who I am that I conform to that and its harder to grow as a person. I feel that in the end the move will be good for me emotionally as well as finacially.
