Want some BTDT mom's opinions on baby throwing up. (Sorry, long with TMI)
I have a call into the doctor, but in the meantime, I figured I'd ask the experienced mommies...
DD threw up while eating both on Sunday morning and this evening. Threw up A LOT...like a fountain, through her mouth and nose (sorry, TMI!). There are a few possibilities that I can figure why this may have happened:
1) She had her 5 month check up on Saturday and her ped suggested that we start weaning her from Prevacid, which she was on for silent reflux. We started skipping the evening dose, so she had missed one by the time she threw up on Sunday morning. Maybe she is now in pain from reflux, and this is causing her to throw up? She was not a vomitter before the Prevacid. If it's reflux though, I would think she would be having problems at other times too.
2) We have been introducing new foods. Sunday morning was the second time with plums (banana-plum blend). She was fine when she had it on Saturday and again on Monday. We then introduced grapes with a banana-plum-grape blend. She had it for the past 3 mornings with no problem. She threw up while eating it tonight.
3) She has had a lingering cold/cough that seems to be mostly post-nasal drip. Maybe she was gagging on mucus?
Both times that she threw up, she started crying/screaming just prior, so she was clearly uncomfortable. As I've posted before, we have issues with DD drinking enough, so I hate her losing her calories and hydration. Of course, she had just actually finished a 5 oz bottle before eating. Prior to that, she had only consumed 7-8 oz for the whole day....
So, any thoughts? Thanks.

i would go with reflux. I know i'm an adult but most fruit gives me heartburn especially bananas and plums :( It could also be the post nasal drip. My kids are pukers if they have a cold because of it. Think about how often we have colds and blow our nose. They can't so all of that is draining and is irritating to them. Did she get any shots?

If it were me, I would limit introducing her to new foods until you have answers from her upper gi...I know my dr has always advised us to go slow with introducing new solids...

Thank you. I think there's a disconnect between DD's ped and GI doc. The ped originally prescribed the Prevacid. The GI felt that it was probably overkill, but allowed her to stay on it. The ped has been guiding us through trying new foods (but just seems to be giving his standard guidelines, nothing special b/c of the reflux..just holding off on dairy until at least 9 months b/c of allergy). I spoke to the GI yesterday, after some bad bottle days, so ped doesn't know that we're going for upper GI yet, and GI hasn't given me any guidance about foods (not that I've asked). I think I need to get everyone on the same page! I think I will stick with familiar foods for the next week until she goes for the test.

Sounds like reflux to me. DD had, still has, some issues with certain textures like thick purees (bananas, mashed sweet potatoes). Could be a combo of coming off the meds and the texture. Not for nothing, but DD was on her Axid until she was a year old and then we very slowly weaned her as we introduced milk. She just might not be ready to be off the meds. GL!

Thanks Shawna. I'm going to give her only familiar foods for the week and see if it happens again. The doctor's office wasn't much help. I didn't talk to my ped, but one of the other docs, and she kind of blew me off. On one hand she said that reducing the Prevacid won't cause an increase in spitting up or vomiting because it only reduces the pain, not the actual reflux. Then she said if she seem uncomfortable to go back to her usual dosage. The thing is, wouldn't I see discomfort at other times two? Literally, it has only been twice in 5 days. She is sleeping fine, not fussing any more than usual, etc.
I think the reason DD's ped is trying to wean her off of the Prevacid so early is that she was subsequently diagnosed with milk protein allergy, and he thinks that is really what was causing her such discomfort, not necessarily reflux...especially since I haven't seen much in the way of reflux symptoms lately (well, until the vomit that is).
I appreciate everyone's input. It's definitely not coxsackie. She is happy otherwise, and has no fever or sores. Just two vomiting episodes in 5 days.

There is a stomach virus going around. DD1 had terrible reflux, and coincidence or not, she gets every.single.stomach.virus super easily...even at 4 1/2 now.

It sounds like reflux because she seems to be in pain but, both of my DS vomit when they have post nasal drip.

I vote reflux. When I started weaning off daughter off her nigh dose of her reflux meds, she had two major projectile episodes like that. I would give her the meds tonight and work down very slowly in dosage. good luck!
