WWYD : Daycare all of sudden closed 2 extra days this year

DD goes to a daycare center. When i first started (April 2011) i signed a contrat or an agreement what ever is called and in it, it stated that they were only closed on major holidays (they are listed) and the only odd one is the friday before labor day for teacher tranning.

I walked in to daycare today and there is a sign that say they will be closed xmas eve and new years eve. These were not days listed and they werent closed for them last year.

I am kind of pissed and annoyed. i dont have off those days and i cant take off cause my backup is already off for those days.

I want to call and complain and either "make" them open which i doubt i can do or min. tell them i refuse to pay for those days then since they are not suppose to be closed.

Am I being unreasonable? WWYD?

I think when Christmas and New Year's fall on a Tuesday, most people have Monday off.

I don't think my office officially closes on those days but no one will be working. I definitely don't plan on coming in.

If those days are not in the contract (btw, did you get new paperwork with the 2012 holidays?) then I think you are right to withhold payment for those days, esp. since you are going to have to scramble to find care now.

Unless a lot of other parents are in the same situation, I doubt they will open the daycare for you.

At my daycare, some of the teachers take care of the kids during holidays. Might be worth asking around.

I would mention that you are not happy that they decided to close and are very disappointed you weren't given more notice. In addition I would say you are not paying for those days as they were not scheduled holidays and you have to find alternate care.

Our office is open New Years Eve, i just asked for the day off (not sure I'll get it though).

We are closed xmas eve and xmas day plus New Years day.

I wonder the same as PP you said you signed in April 11, but did you get your update for 2012?

The dates themselves dont surprise me. AJ's school is closed ALL week of xasm and the 31st, 1st, AND second!

What annoys me is the 2nd. but given how the new handbook says my director and kick AJ out if she feels like the parent interaction is counter to their mission, I'm keeping my mouth shut (allbeit I'm grinding my teeth).

I'd be ticked off too! My office is open, my sisters, my dhs, my bil- almost everyone I know is working those days.. I'd definitely complain and withhold the money for those days.

so i apparently the contract states that at any holiday they can take the day before and after

so i asked the owner so your telling me that now for every hoilday your gonig to be closed the day before or after - her answer no

ok so then next year if xmas and new years is on wednsday your going to be closed tuesday too - her answer no

so basically they decided yesterday they will close the day before this year. (director told me this also)

I am still annoyed I specifically asked the director serveral time if they close the day before xmas and new years and they told me no. If it was an easy thing to do i would switch daycare

I think it was inconsiderate of them to give such short notice. less than month really is not enough time since people put time off in early. I feel we should have found out at the beginning of the year.

i guess it is what it is. I havent had the best couple days so im probably be overly sensitive about this whole thing

I agree it's in bad taste but perhaps something came up. It's within her right per the contract. I would be irritated also.

Having worked in healthcare and public service in general many people do NOT get the day before or after off, and most have to work THAT DAY. To think most people have those days off is very tunnel visioned. What about: fire, police, ems, grocery stores, gas stations, doctors, nurses, hospital staff, clinics, doctors offices and so on. The world keeps turning no matter the day.

I do have to say that I honestly don't think 26 days notice is bad. It could be worse and they told you 2wks before or the week before, but 3.5wks.....that seems reasonable to me. I think the fact you're upset is making it seem shorter since it's not a full month, but it's only 4 days short of a month KWIM

I understand the reasoning this year... those are Mondays, some companies still let people out early before holidays so to close for the weekend to reopen for a partial day just to close for a day and half is alot easier to make it a long weekend.( my old office use to do this)....

hey, its the Christmas season, I love ds's teachers so I'd be happy if they are being treated well, motivates them to stay. ds daycare actually sent us a survey out a month ago checking who would be bringing their kids in durring xmas week so they wouldn't have to overstaff. dh always takes off xmas eve, and fil always takes off nye so I'm covered,
