Breast feeding AND formula feeding

Please no judgements on not ebf--- i would if i could.

Any One else do both ? I had to introduce formula in hospital when dd was 3 days old because she couldn't maintain her temperature and losing too much weight. I also have very low milk supply -when I pump I get drops-but dd still latches great and is on each breast for a while.

When she is done she is still hungry and fussy so she gets a formula bottle.

My breasts didn't change at all during pregnancy, I never got engorged and don't have that " full feeling"

My peciatrician wants me to do one feeding just breast, next just formula.... I've tried this numerous times but after breast ( even when on for over an hour) when she unlatches she is fussy and looking for food so I give her a bottle.

( dd will be 3 weeks on Tuesday)

Just wanted to see if anyone else is/was in a similar situation

I was in the same situation. I nursed for 20 min then would follow up with formula. My supply wasn't enough for her and eventually after a few issues, I ended up stopping at 3 months. Keep doing what you're doing! Make sure you are drinking a ton of water. That helped my supply a bit. Good luck!

Breast feeding AND formula feeding

I EBF DS for the first 6 weeks but then my supply couldn't keep up with his growing body and need for more breast milk. From 6 weeks through his first birthday I did both. He was nursed at night before bed and usually one other time during the day, the rest of the time he had formula. I agree with a PP, drink lots of water! I was able to get 14 months out of BF, but by the end I only had enough for once before bed.

i did BF and FF for 9m. i had low supply due to a very traumatic birth (lots of blood loss) and my supply never came in the right way. but i stuck with BF as long as i could. i pumped also until 6m but i was getting sooo little milk it stopped being worth it. so i just continued BF and FF until she became disinterested in BF (mainly when she was on table foods). its is definitely doable!! good luck!!

Re: Breast feeding AND formula feeding

I started giving formula when DS was 4 weeks old because he would scream and scream until I fed him more. Definitely nothing wrong at all with it!

I tried to supplement also. Nothing wrong with it! i tried to pump with each feeding. even with the formula feed - pump because it will tell your body your baby needs to eat then and will help with your production. It's great you are still nursing. That's where I fell short and DD wouldn't latch anymore after getting used to the ease of a bottle. Good luck!

Breast feeding AND formula feeding

I started supplementing after about a week. I was paranoid my DD was not getting enough from me. I did both until about 4 months when I just did FF. my DD had a milk allergy so I had cut it from my diet as well and I think I wasn't getting enough nutrients by the food I was eating.

Re: Breast feeding AND formula feeding

I did both due to low supply. I tried everything to try to increase it but nothing really worked. What I did was always start with bf. If he seemed fussy after, like he was still hungry, I would then give him formula. Sometimes he was satisfied with the nursing session & other times he needed more. I did this for 3 months & then switched to formula only.

I pumped and supplemented for 9 months, starting on day 1. My supply took a huge hit around 6 months when I came down with a stomach virus and never really got make to normal so after 9 months, it was formula only bc I was not producing anything anymore.

Re: Breast feeding AND formula feeding

I do both because I work and hate pumping so DS gets formula during the day and BM when I get home

I was not in the same situation, but I plan to BF and use formula when I go out and can't BF in private. I don't see myself pumping. Don't feel guilty!! Half the people I know never breastfed because frankly they didn't want to. It wasn't for them. There is no judgement. You have to do what's best for you and the baby.

Re: Breast feeding AND formula feeding

With both my girls I have supplemented with formula.

With ODD I had to be put under general anesthesia and was so tired when I got up that I asked the hospital to give her formula. Over the next two weeks I cut back formula and upped how much I BF and got to a point where she was EBF from 2 weeks old to 14 weeks old. Then when I went back to work she got a mix of BM and formula during the day because the most I was able to pump was 9 ounces.

With YDD she was EBF until I went back to work at 11 weeks. She mostly gets BM at daycare but sometimes gets formula if she is very hungry. My supply is much better this time around.

I went through a period of feeling guilty that I couldn't only give my girls BM but I got over that quickly. They are
healthy and happy and that is what matters the most.

Re: Breast feeding AND formula feeding

I have BF and supplemented with formula with all of my children until BFing didn't work for us.

With DD #1 it was at 2.5 weeks when I became sick and hospitalized and couldn't BF.

with DD #2, she was EBF for 3 weeks and diagnosed with failure to thrive so we had to supplement with formula around the 3rd week. We BF and FF unitl 4 months when we started cereals.

With DD#3, by the 2nd day in the hospital she was screaming for more after BFing for 15 min on each side so I supplemented from then on and lasted till about 2.5 months.

With DS, i was advised in the hospital by my ped and all of the nurses to give him formula from the beginning until my milk really came in to regulate everything in his body. He's now a little over 2 weeks old and we've had a few trips back to the hospital and have slowly been re-introducing BF along with the FF, but I know that he will be a FF baby and I'm ok with that.

I've never had a good milk supply and my children have thrived on formula, and it fills up their bellies for longer so you get a little bit longer sleep in between feedings.
