Re: So, someone dedicated a tumblr to calling out racist tweets....

I think this is akin to getting fired for something you post on fb or twitter, or even not getting a job because of it. When you decide not to set privacy settings, and you post something and your name/picture is attached to it, you have to own it.

I don't know if anyone heard about the twitter account ComfortablySmug who posted a bunch of ******** reports during Sandy - he was a campaign manager for a Republican running for city council and because of his stunt on Twitter he got fired.

Same idea here, to me.

I'm glad they are blogging about it. I hope people realize the horrible crap they post lives on forever - for future employers, for future ILs, future co-workers, etc.

These kids are idiots. Putting their disgustingly racist views out in public like this for all the world to see will come back to bite them in the ass if they apply for jobs, scholarships, etc. So many companies are doing internet research on job candidates, checking facebook and twitter.

It makes me sad that they are mostly so YOUNG. I don't know, maybe it's just living in NY and Queens at that, but I'm just shocked and appalled that people still think like that. I guess I thought it was more of an older generation, stuck-in-their-ways kinda thing. But I guess you hear your parents and grandparents say it enough, it starts to stick.

theres a young girl from oakdale wearing a connetquot lacross sweatshirt.. i hope someone reports her to the school administration. what a disgrace.

Yup. Complete with her name. Not that the other kids aren't real but seeing a LOCAL kid .... Chat Icon

I get the disgrace...but it's not illegal to be racist...what exactly would they do? deny her an education because of her beliefs? that doesn't seem like the right course of action either. First amendment gives people the right to freedom of speech no matter how idiotic or disgraceful the people who choose to exercise it may be.

As to the free speech issue, I think a line of free speech might be crossed when suggesting assassination of the president. I think that might be one of those exceptions like yelling "fire" in a crowded movie theater.

i agree...but there are LEGAL repercussions put in place for this.

as opposed to the vigilante justice that this may be inciting? (i don't mean that sarcastically)

exactly, actually. what is the purpose of knowing their personal info besides planning to confront them? and what comes from confrontation? escalation. sure it'll scare the bejesus out of them...but chances are if someone is fueled by anger by their comments enough to find them or confront them...they're not looking to do it over a cup of coffee and conversation KWIM?

I guess I'm just not sure what the positive gain is...all i see if a possibility of escalation, retaliation, racially fuelled physical violence etc. I don't see how the TUMBLR page does anything POSITIVELY to affect the situation.

I do KWYM. Just to play devil's advocate here... couldn't the vigilantes do some sort of search on twitter and find people making awful racist and assassinatory remarks re: president and put together the info that way? Or is the issue here that it's packaged up all nicely for them so they don't have to do the legwork?

LOVE THIS!

This reminds me of something I learned years ago....people are only born with two ideas ingrained in them - a fear of falling, and a fear of being left alone. EVERYTHING else is taught!

exactly my issue...that it's packaged up and gifted. If someone is going to go out of their way to look them up and do something...we can do nothing about that...but to package it all up like that I feel like it almost invites or plants a seed to the idea of retaliation

I think anyone making comments about asassinating the president should be investigated. Not that I think any one of them would actually do something, but there needs to be consequences.

L-O-V-E This!!!!!!

I cannot believe that in the year 2012 there are STILL people who talk and think like this. The one person who said that minorities shouldn't be allowed to vote bc they'll just vote for the minority? And then they talk about "America"?!?!?! Have they no clue what America was built on? Have they no clue what our forefathers fought for? So sad how ignorant people STILL are. Chat Icon

It is a good thing Romney doesnt have a twitter, or does he? he would be all over it. For his very "racist" remarks, that he "doesnt mean to be racist"

Actually, it is illegal to be racist, in many instances. Its not illegal to have racist thoughts or to express them (unless they are a direct threat to someone), but it is illegal to discriminate against someone based on their race - And I have no doubt that these kids will one day discriminate against others that are not like "them" if given the opportunity to do so.

I guess I can see that. Queens is so diverse, it's near impossible to be racist. We just hate everybody instead.

reading what these people wrote makes me sick. I believe the purpose is public shaming, not violence. However, I would be concerned that violence would result.

I'm sorry...but regardless of how you feel about racism thats a bit of a stretch. being racist and discriminating against someone for a position are two different scenarios. Being racist is NOT illegal nor is voicing a racist opinion. So unless we're going to eliminate free speech, I don't see what people propose should exactly be done about this.I'm not really addressing the racism anyway. I'm addressing the fact that the person who created the TUMBLR may be endangering these KIDS lives...which to me is worse than someone just being an uninformed, ignorant A-hole.For instance i see people saying "they should be called out" but does anyone not think that by posting their racist comments along with the personal information of where people live and their jobs will get people fired up enough to want to go to their home or job? what happens then? I'd be willing to bet my ass they won't be looking to have a nice discussion over tea and crumpets. I'm sure more than just a "calling out" will happen. Just as dumb as these kids were to spew their hatred online where their personal info is easily attainable...there are others just as stupid who will see that info and think "hey let's go kick their ass!" or worse...murder them... I like the comment someone above made re: the kids having an opportunity to go to college, or travel and expand their minds...at their age...they just don't know enough beyond what they've been exposed to in their environment.

I see what you're saying - but I worry more about the black or spanish child these kids encounter and decide to do something to THEM (my future child included) If you're going to have these thoughts and display them on a public forum then you need to be able to face the consequences. THey weren't concerned about retribution when they wrote these terrible statements - they were laughing their asses off

I hear that. But, I'm thinking by their age and looking at them they probably are just doing what kids do...repeating what they hear and thinking it makes them seem cool. I don't consider it a threat so much (except of course the assasination threats...even though those too are probably just the result of people with small brains and big mouths and not people who actually intend to cause damage...although these days one can never know). I'm a minority myself...I've had plenty of things said both to my face and behind it re: my race, upbringing, where I grew up, who raised me etc...most of it was done by people who are sheltered, uninformed, ignorant, etc. Sooo many people are racist...even people who swear they aren't. They'll tell you they aren't racist but then ask you if you're related to the one and only other hispanic in the room / building.Chat Icon I'm a firm believer in karma...SOMEONE will set them straight...or they will lose a job or something over it...but to post the info online for the masses to see as they read all these racist remarks and get amped up over it is a dangerous move. JMO

those that made assassination remarks should 100% be arrested and investigated. Even if it's just to scare the crap out of them and teach them a lesson.
