Fighting over a freaking car seat!

So every single time we get into my car DS 3.5 y/o & DD 2.5 y/o fight over who gets the "pink carseat." Technically it's DD's but I try to get them to take turns. Low and behold it's a major melt down.

I was thinking about just buying another one like we have just to avoid the fights. But not sure it's the right thing to do. DH will think I'm nuts but I'm not sure I can handle this every single time.

This isn't the only thing they fight over... this is a true story... took them for haircuts and the haircutter asked me if she could give them balloons. I told her only if you give them the same thing. Well, she did. THE EXACT SAME COLOR BALLOON WITH THE EXACT SAME COLOR RIBBON THAT HAD THE EXACT SAME LENGTH. And they freaking fought over one particular one where there was no discernable difference between the two. They just want what the other has. Period.

What do I do?

To avoid this, the kids sit in the same colored car seat, in the same seat all the time. Since there is a year between your kids, aren't the settings on the car seats different? I know I have to adjust mine as they get bigger, but their headrests are at different heights.

I usually say Ok no balloons in your second example. The first is tough because my kids usually have the same seats and sit in the same spot. If its not imperative that ou leave, I would just say OK everyone inside. We are not going out until you can learn how to be big boys and girls. Then put them in time out in the house. Then try again

This is a good idea. I guess I thought maybe just to avoid the fighting I would get an identical seat but then they will probably fight over where the seat is located or something else I am not anticipating. I should change the behavior instead of working around it. Thanks!

You should be able to just buy a new car seat cover and not a whole new one- and I would do that if it will make your life easier Chat Icon

See... this is how I think... but he has a slightly different model and I don't think it will match. And the existing one has a small tear on one side... this made me think... if they can fight over the same f'in balloon they are going to find something to fight about with these seats no matter what. That said... another weekend of this and I might just be ordering it anway!

This was going on with my 4.5 yo DS and 2 yo DD for 2 weeks. She has a pink car sea and he's has a grey one. I got sick of it and basically told them that that they will get time outs and lose privileges (tv, play time) and that nipped it in the bud.

I only have one DC so far, but this is what my mom did with my sister and I growing up. I think it helps to stop the behavior of fighting over every little thing. Otherwise, it's just gonna keep going and going...

Be strong, tell them who gets what when. These are the rules.

exactly my thought.

You are giving in to their fighting and then they are getting their way. YOU make the decision, tell them who gets what and end it.

I gotta ask...is the pink seat different ? More comfortable ?
Or is it just pink ?

I think you are right, they will find something else to fight over ..I want the NEW one... I want the OLD one. It wont stop.
