Would you be upset if your preschool sent DS out in the cold without a winter coat?

I sent DS to school wearing a down winter coat yesterday. At pick up, we found him shivering outside in the playground wearing a thin windbreaker. The windbreaker was left behind from last week.

I was also wearing a winter puffy coat and still cold yesterday. It was in the 30's. I'm pissed. DS already has a cold and feel it got worse last night.

Am I rightfully pissed?

I've never said anything negative to the teachers but I commented this morning to the head teacher.

Did they say why he was not in the coat?
I know my DD is VERY difficult about wearing jackets- she fights me and her teacher's tooth and nail.
Some days I just pick my battles and let it go- I figure she isn't going to freeze to death.

As far as getting sick or sicker from being cold- that's really just a wive's tale so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

But yes, I would want to know why they had him in the lighter jacket when you sent him in the heavier one...

yeah I would be annoyed..... If they said they couldn't find his heavy coat - then maybe they should have kept him in another classroom durring that time... shivering is not right.

These three points.. exactly

Where was his coat, why wasn't it on him?

Cold gives you a cold is an old wives tales. Frankly being outside (even in cold) is better than being inside sharing germs. Fresh air is good. Cold air reduces swelling and soothes irration.

But.. to be totally honest? HELL YEAH I'd be on the phone ASAP with a W T H type thing. Chat Icon

But i am definitely 'that' mom. I just got stern because she's come home in band aids twice now without a letter or explanation. Both were late I found out two days later on one, and the next night on the other. The "im sorry I forgot" line is getting old. My kid comes home in a bandaid I want to know why.Chat Icon

Could they possibly not have known he came in a heavier coat and just put his windbreaker on him?

DH is a doctor and he always says that about not getting sick or sicker from cold temperature!

My mom actually picked up DS from school yesterday so I was not there to ask questions. I talked to the lead teacher this morning but she wasn't aware of it. She is actually the one who commented on DS's cold and cough.

Whether or not you can get sicker from the cold is one thing, whether my kid is uncomfortably cold is another. I think they should put him in the coat I send in. I wonder what the teachers were wearing in the cold? I would say something.

But did he have a heavier coat at school with him? I would be mad that he was out there freezing, BUT I also feel like I have to make sure he has the right stuff at school with him for cold weather....

If DS was comfortable I'd be okay with it. HE usually gets hot. I did pick him up from daycare one day and they couldn't find the shirt he came in with - still don't know where it went.

Duh!! The first line if your post Chat Icon sorry!!!
Then yeah, I would definitely want to know why he wasn't wearing it!!
I know DS sometimes fights us on his heavy coats... So maybe that was it?? But that's the schools responsibility to make him wear it, or keep him inside if he really refuses to wear it!

Re: Would you be upset if your preschool sent DS out in the cold without a winter coat?

It was far too cold out yesterday for any child to be outside for an extended period of time without a warm jacket.

I would be pretty upset and I'd talk to the teacher about it.
