Would you fight DH on this (birthday party)?
DS#1 and DS#2's birthday are 1 day apart. We recently moved to the DC area in 2011. Last year, we had a joint birthday party (1st and 3rd birthday) because we had only known our guests for a few months and didn't think anyone would want to be burdened with 2 parties for us.
Fast forward 1 year, DH wants to once again have a joint party. He wants it out of the home at My Gym or similar. Problem is that My Gym can only hold 20 kids (25 kids max and it would be crowded). DS#1's class is 16 kids and DS#2's class is 14 kids. We also have at least 10 other families if not more. We have more than enough guests to have 2 separate parties for the boys. I would also really like to invite my mom's group of 15 moms. (Last year we had about 40 kids and that was before DS#2 was in preschool.)
DS#1 wants to have a home party with a particular entertainer (Eric Energy who we saw at a marketing event. He is awesome!).
Would you fight DH on this and push for a home party for DS#1 and a My Gym party for DS#2?
What pisses me off about DH is that he just doesn't like going to kiddie parties. He does everything in his power never to go. Unless he is friends with the dad, he won't go. Most of his friends don't have kids yet or they are out of state.

I think they are both young enough that you can still have a shared party. I would have it at home with the entertainer that your older DS wants. The younger one will really never know the difference.

well, it looks like you have 2 separate groups of friends for each of the kids. If you were just inviting family and your friends with kids, then i would have one party at the home. Why make the same people come out twice? however, you are inviting both classes, which is a lot of kids, so i would do 2 separate parties.

Besides the preschool classes, most people know both our kids.
DH thinks we should just not invite DS#2's class since we don't click with anyone. He is basing this on attending the open house where we were bouncing from DS#1's class to DS#2's class and not talking to parents (just the teacher). He also disregards my mom's group, which also bothers me. Since he does not know them, he thinks we are not close even if I have been hanging out with them weekly for over a year.
Another option is to have the joint party at home, invite DS#1's entire preschool class and selectively invite from DS#2's class and the mom's group. I feel bad because I think some moms may feel bad since this group is small. I would rather invite everyone and know only half or so would come vs inviting only half and the other half feel bad.
I think it would be SO easy to have the second party at My Gym. I could invite DS#2's preschool class and the Mom's Club friends to My Gym. We could invite DS#1's preschool class and our family friends to our house.

Re: Would you fight DH on this (birthday party)?
If it were me, I would have two parties. I would separate them by a month. I would do the four year old's bday party closer to the actual bday and the two year old you can push out a few weeks. Personally, if it's not a money issue (and it doesn't sound like it is) I think a 4yr old and a 2yr old should have their own parties. Maybe its just my kids but, their bday parties are a HUGE deal for them - it's their special day - they pick the place, the "theme", the cake design, the guest list etc. And I disagree that a 2yr old doesn't know the difference. My DD is 2.5 and for her 2yr old bday she picked the place, the minnie mouse theme and even helped me "design" the cake. She was so excited about her party she talked about it before and after constantly. But, if your kids are up for sharing the day and don't mind and want to do a combined bday party than I guess it isn't an issue.

It is not a money issue. It is a DH not liking kiddie party issue.
We hosted a halloween party and went to another 2 parties on Halloween weekend. DH moaned and groaned the whole time, saying that we are going to too many parties.
Now the holidays are coming up and he is once again complaining that we are too committed. He doesn't even attend most of them with me. The president of the mom's club I'm in asked if we could host the holiday party because we have the space and I agreed. Now DH wants me to get out of it. He is the opposite of holiday spirit.
eta: it feels like pulling teeth to get him to go but once he goes, he usually has an ok time. Same goes for vacations. He has tried to get out of going to Disney, Dutch Wonderland, Sesame, etc. so many times.

I feel his pain because we are also too committed! No joke we have a bday party every single weekend day (excluding thanksgiving weekend) from now until end of January!
That said, it's his kid's birthday!!!!
