How much would you tip?

How much would you tip?

This is my first year using a babysitter 4 days a week for my DS. She also watches a few other kids and she is not licensed. Since she is paid cash she makes what I would estimate to be equivalent to someone on the books making at least 100k.

What would you tip her for Xmas?

I feel awkward handing her an envelope of cash. If I was a babysitter I would just expect a nice gift card or something inexpensive but that is just me.

Would you give a generous gift card instead of cash? If so, how much?

Thanks!

Re: How much would you tip?

How old is she? Maybe something from Vera Bradley like a nice bag or something! Everyone always thinks cash for babysitters, cleaning ladies and all and they say the equivalent to one weeks pay, but personally, I disagree. A nice gift card for $100 or a nice gift is just as good IMO! It's the thought that counts in my eyes ::))

She watches your kids full time. People tip their weekly cleaning lady $100. I am a terrible tipper but I think $100 is too little. Maybe check with the other moms she sits for!

Re: How much would you tip?

Thank you for your input!! I don't know the other moms! I am hesitant to tip her that much since she makes a significant amount of $$ since she watches other kids in addition to my ds. I don't want to look cheap but I am not sure if giving her hundreds extra during the holidays is something I want to do. I am trying to justify it by thinking of how much tip she will get if each mom gave her $500. I am pretty sure that she is very very well off so I am hesitant since I think tips should be for people who don't make a decent salary. There are probably some families that can't afford an extra $500.

Maybe $150 - 200 is better?

I'm a nanny and I receive an extra weeks pay from each family as a holiday bonus. I watch for 2 different families.

If you want to tip her, tip her based on the service she provides for YOU and your kids alone - don't take into consideration how many other kids she watches or what other people might give her or what her salary is. And how well off she may or may not be is really not relevant. If she's doing a service for you that you feel you should tip her for, then you tip her.
You shouldn't give her more or less based upon outside factors - just give her what you'd like to give her as a gift. That's all.

In this case, i think $100 or $150 g/c would be very nice and very generous.

ITA with this! Do what you can do. Don't take what you think is her salary into consideration.
A GC is definitely a nice gesture. ANY gift is a nice gesture.

How much would you tip?

damnn.....100k a year babysitting!!!! Good for her!

I say $100 gc is a great gift idea! Maybe something sentimental from your dc as well. I would have loved that when I was a nanny.

I agree with the above post - I'm not really understanding why her overall salary, financial situation, tips or gifts she may receive from others should be considered in what you want to give her...

Because people who make 6 figures typically do not receive holiday tips even if they are providing a service. (I sure wish they did though!)

I dont know anyone who uses a babysitter so I was unsure if $100 was too small of a tip/gift in this situation as in general I feel that people go overboard with holiday gifts.

Re: How much would you tip?

My mom was a day care provider for 30 years- a week's pay as a tip is appropriate.
100$ is too little.
