Is 5 to young for a DSi?

DS is 5 and REAAALY wants a DS for Christmas.
Im on the fence, i dont want him attached to a video game all the time. We also have a Wii system that we will play as a family before bed some nights.

Is 5yo ok to get a DS?

My nephew didn't get one til he was 7. My brother didn't think he was responsible at a younger age to own an expensive toy and take care of it properly. The monitor his use also.

My sons were 3 and 4 when they got them. There are plenty of games that are preschooler friendly and the dsi itself is pretty well made and withstood lots of dropping.

ETA my boys are very rough and tumble "playing outside" sporty kids, so instead of being concerned they would have too much screen time, I was actually looking for something that would encourage them to play quietly for a change. It worked. Sometimes. Chat Icon

ds got his when he turned 4. For the first 6 months heused it occasionally. But by 4.5 he really got the hang of it and loves it.
He uses it alot in the car, or when we are going somewhere that we might have to wait. We keep an eye on how much he plays it, and he knws bad behavior means losing his DS for a couple of days.

We have the dsixl,2 pieces of advice a friend gave me (and they were great tidbits) get the nerf case. It triples the size of the DS, but that thing could go down a flight of stairs and be fine. The other is go to game top a buy the pre owned games. DS has a ton of games but outside of the ones that were gifts from family members all are pre own and were very inexpensive.
