Milk from Straw Cup
DD is 15 mths and my ped said she wants her off the bottle by her 18mth checkup. She has been drinking water from a straw cup since 6 mths, never had an issue. I tried getting her off the bottle at 12 mths, then 13 mths, and I have been trying again the past couple of days.
She doesn't ask for the bottle, she doesn't even miss it, but refuses to drink her milk from the straw cup. I have tried chocolate milk, not giving her water all day, and she will just sip here and there after I tell her no water. Her diapers are not as wet anymore, so do I give up on the milk, or give the bottle back so she gets the milk she needs?

Re: Milk from Straw Cup
I have the same problem but she won't drink milk, period, out of anything. Ped said it's fine as long as she's eating yogurt/cheese etc. and just to keep trying. I diluted milk with water (like, severely diluted, more than it would be if I bought skim) and she drank it with little resistance...

Milk from Straw Cup
See my ped said she should still be drinking like 16oz, thats why I am worried. I does eat a lot of cheese, yogurt sometimes, so I feel like she needs more dairy

Re: Milk from Straw Cup
Have you tried something other than a straw cup, like a soft or hard spout sippy? My DS won't do milk from a straw, but he likes the soft spout sippys, which I guess are kind of like bottles, but whatever...

Re: Milk from Straw Cup
She only needs calcium from 1.5c of milk a day, so its really not much. You can offer yogurt and cheese to make up what she's not drinking.
how much milk do kids need
I think we switched to sippy cups before we switched to milk ... so what we did was just substitute a little milk for formula every day till he was weaned off formula.

Milk from Straw Cup
I boought different straw cups. Have no tried a sippy. She is only taking little sips here and there. I doubt she eats 1.5 cups of milk a day. I just don't understand why she has np problem with the water and the milk is an issue.

Re: Milk from Straw Cup
My DS was the same way. He is now almost 20 months, took the bottle away when he was 12 months and hasn't drank milk every since! He barely drinks juice, he loves water, and nothing else. The first week or so i got rid of the bottle he almost refused to drink at all, and yes, his diapers weren't as wet. But eventually he got thirsty and drank water from the sippy, and that's it. He's a big eater, but as far as dairy, i dont think he's getting enough, but i offer it to him throughout the day. As long as i try, i know im doing my best. He's healthy, the ped says he's healthy, so im not worried. Im sure one day he'll like to drink milk again.

Is it more important for them to not have the bottle at 15mths, or to be having the recc amount of milk? I just always thought that milk was super important at this age.

Re: Milk from Straw Cup
To be honest, my 1st ped said nothing about taking my son off the bottle. It was my choice at 12 months because i knew the longer i gave it to him, the more attached he would be. However, i switched ped. and she said that it's good i took him off the bottle. And even if they don't seem to get enough milk, keep introducing it to your DC, one day they will drink it again. I've tried everything, new sippy, flavored milk, yogurt with elmo on it, cheese with the crayon lable on front (he will eat probably 1-2 serving of dairy a day). I chose no bottle and keep giving dairy everyday even if he doesn't eat it. Thats what i do.

Re: Milk from Straw Cup
DD wouldn't drink milk from anything besides her bottle either until a few days ago. It was kinda funny because I had her morning bottle in the frige becaused she didn't finish it. When I opened the fridge she grabbed it & wanted to drink it. I made her watch me open the bottle & pour the milk from it into her sippy & she drank it, I couldn't believe it! She's almost 16 months, I didn't think she would get the concept, I didn't realize my child was such a genious

Re: Milk from Straw Cup
i had the same problem...he would drink juice and water from sippy cups, straw cups, even regular cups. But when it came to his milk he would only be interested if it were in the bottle. As he got to 13 mos. he would drink it from a straw cup but we still give him a bottle before bed because it's just easier / cleaner to drink as he lays back on his pillow before bed. he's 16 mos now and if i gave it to him in a sippy or straw cup he would drink it. Be patient, I think it's a normal phase. As long as she KNOWS how to drink from sippy cups etc. and does so majority of the time I don't see an issue
