Cannot figure out what is wrong...wanted to see if anyone can offer any insight
My son just turned 4 last week. A couple of months ago he started complaining of leg cramps, pain in his knees and was just tired alot. Blood work revealed he had resolving epstein bar. He was tested fir lymes and RA and they were neg.
His tiredness went away, but the leg pains became more constant, and then he started complaining that his whole body hurts (I have noticed that he seems to say this after he wakes up).
jHe has been potty trained for more than 2 years, but sometimes when he passes gas, something will come out...it is not loose it is regular consistency. When he passes gas now, he sits down to I guess hold to keep it from coming out...its sooo sad to see. The dr thought he may have a milk allergy so we put him on a dairy free diet.
He then started also complaining about stomach pain around his belly button...I got an appt with the gi, and he said that his bowels seem fine, no constipation, but there was blood in his stool. he too thought that he had an allergy...tested him for the 8 most common allergens, and they came back neg. I have to know him give a stool sample for eval.
In the past 2 weeks, his yes have been hurting him. He said they r dry and burning. Drs office said to give him claritan, but its not helping.
I am going to see his ped tom, and tell him I need answers, this isnt normal, but not sure what to ask him to test for?
Soory its so long. Thank you!

I'm a dietitan, joint pain can be associated with celiac disease (gluten intolerance). And it would certainly cause gas and diarrhea. They can test for antigens with a blood test. May not hurt to ask.

I'm so sorry your poor soon is going through this, it must be so hard for you.
I just reread and saw he had blood in his stools. I would go back to the GI. They should do an endoscopy to look for a source of bleeding. I know its invasive and your son would have to be sedated, but it sounds like he's feeling very poorly.
THe other thing to consider is that it could be anxiety related, stomach pains, etc. Have there been any big changes in his life?

Thank you for your input. Do you know what they would be looking for by sending out a stool sample? I had the 2 little ones with me when I went, and by the end they were getting a little cranky, so I def. did not hear all I should have
As far as the endoscopy, is it done in a hospital? I am just so nervous that there is something wrong, and obviously I dont want anything to get overlooked

Im not sure if it is anxiety related. I did just have a baby in July, but this was going on before. He does not seem to have any anxiety or anything over the new baby or anything else that is going on, but it is def. something for me to look out for . Thank you again!

I was going to say it sounds like RA, but re read your post and it was ruled out. It almost seems like it's auto-immune related. Sjogren's syndrome has some of those symptoms, esp with now his eye complaints, but I don't know how common that is in children. Has dr said anything about lupus?

thank you, I am going to look that up. He has not said anything about lupus, but lupus runs in my family...my maternal aunt and my paternal aunt both have it.
Do you know if RA always shows up on a blood test? I think I may ask if he can test for it again

They can look for a bunch of stuff in a stool sample- traces of blood, amount of fat that could show some sort of malabsorption, they can look for some sort of infection/ parasites.
An endoscopy would likley be in a hospital or an outpatient surgical center. But with pediatrics probably the outpatient center of a hospital.

I know there are certain tests that may detect levels of inflammation. I would maybe look into a pediatric rheumatologist for some additional bloodwork and opinions.
