Adding new baby to insurance...

So... I'm gonna beat dh right now! Just found out he never added our five week old to his insurance! I did everything besides putting the paperwork in his hand as he walked out the door, so my blood is boiling right now! Are we completely screwed? Has this happened to anyone? Are they going to make us pay for the hospital? Ughhh

Adding new baby to insurance...

u would probably need the birth cerificate first and then it would be retroactive. your insurance should of covered the hospital bill.

eta: my DS was covered under my insurance even in his first few weeks at the peds office.

You normally only have 30 days to add a newborn to a policy for the birth, nursery stay, etc. to be covered. I would contact the insurance company ASAP and see what can be done.

In response to the above, the newborn is only covered on your own policy if you are adding that newborn to your policy within that 30 day period. If you don't add them you are responsible for the bills. It's confusing to understand.

My dh did the same thing. Ds is 2 months and I went to fill his reflux meds and realized I never got an ins card for him. Turns out dh never filled out the paper work. He did it on ds 2 month bday and we didn't have a problem adding him.

call the HR dept and see what they say.. i know for when we added DS we only had 30 days to add him to the insurance, but since it took nearly a month to get the birth certificate (according to town hall they were severely backlogged the month DS was born), they were able to accept a letter from the hospital saying he was born there in the meantime..

My HR told me we only had 30 days to add DS to my policy. I didn't even need his birth certificate, I went to HR and gave them DS name and date of birth and received the INS card a few days later. Good Luck I hope they allow you to add your DC.

Me too. I didn't have my twins birth certificates or ss #s when I added them (I did it while still in the hospital) and didn't need either, just names and date of birth. GL.

Crashing - work in HR -

Technically, you do only have 30 days to add the child to insurance. But, that being said, every company is ABLE to add the baby after that time. There is always a away.....

I have made this exception many times and allowed people to add the baby. Technically they could tell you no but that would be very mean. If that happens, your DH should ask to speak to a manager and plead his case.

They will charge you paycheck deductions back to the date of birth - so not sure how much that will be but just as an FYI, your DH will have to pay for those missed payments and it could be a lot if they take it all from one check.

Ok, I feel a little better knowing they can do it if they want. Thanks for the responses

I just asked my sister about this ( She is an account manager at an insurance company) and she said that the 30 day rule is usually HR's rule and that many cases the insurance company will allow you to go back 90 days and add a new child. GL

Call and beg. I made a mistake by not clicking on to something when adding DD electronically to my plan. Found out by my pediatrician. They did add me.
