Freezer stash if we lose power
Craaaaaaap, I built up a nice little freezer stash. I am really really hoping we dont lose power, or at least not for a long time.
I might start using the stash, just so it doesnt go to waste....

This is my biggest fear. I have so much milk frozen!!! I tallied it last night and I have 8 gal. Feeding the twins forever! Or hopefully not feeding them it all this week!

Just start making ice now. As long as your freezer is not opened you can go hours without food starting to defrost!

not a bad idea and i just saw on the Weather channel that you can keep stuff longer but putting water bottles, and/or ziplocs half filled with water into the freezer-everywhere and that ice will keep your freezer in tact for longer. i just filled my freezer space with this and am hoping for the best

Dry icewill definitely work. I recently moved to NC and had to transport my stash ( about 210 ounces). I put it in a cooler with dry ice. It made the ten hour trip and took a week to melt away.
Too bad my husband left the freezer door opened 2 weeks later and ruined more than 2/3 of my stash

Me too. I have so much in my spare freezer, I will be so upset if we lose all the food.

Make lots of ice and put it in ziplocks. Or as someone mentioned, fill ziplocks halfway with water and freeze them. Put all the ice around the milk. If the power goes out do not open the freezer.
Also if the power does go out, call around to see who has power and borrow their freezer. I stored milk for people last time there was a big storm.

You should call your local fire department, I heard once that they may be able to help out in an emergency.

I was just saying this to my Dh! Going to make frozen packs to keep the stash cold. Let's hope for no power outages

Re: Freezer stash if we lose power
if you find out please post. I am nervous about losing my supply as well- i have enough for about a month once my supply starts to diminish. i also have about 4 days in the fridge for day care. I am absolutely terrified adn knowing how good LIPA is- we are guaranteed some days wtihout power.

I'm curious about this too. If we get evacuated I'm certainly bringing the milk with me, but I can't imagine my IL's freezer will have enough room for all all of it. I bought a deep freezer specifically for my milk supply and I have hundreds of oz.

It sucks to lose food, but I'm pretty sure most of the posts were about losing breastmilk. I'm in CT and we lost all of our food during both storms last year. We were without power for 4 days for the first storm and 5-6 for the second one. It sucked to lose so much food, but this time I have 400 oz of milk in the freezer. I'm already freaking out. I'm trying to pack the freezer up as much as possible. If it's packed and you don't open it, you should be ok for at least 24 hours if not more. Good luck!

Re: Freezer stash if we lose power
Our neighbors have a generator so we usually hook up the refrigerator to them but I would get bags of ice and stash it in the freezer. It should hold over until you get power back on...hopefully.
