Is a newborn supposed to sleep between each feeding?
DS is 3 weeks old and there are times he sleeps great in between feedings but sometimes he's very fussy. The pacifier will calm him down and he'll fall asleep but once it falls out he's not happy. The dr. wants me to space out his feedings about 3-4 hours but he doesn't seem content for very long in between feedings. Any advice would be appreciated.

I laughed at are newborns supposed to...They really don't do anything they don't want to do, and each is different! Is he formula fed or BF? I have two sons, and the first went 3-4 hours between feedings from birth, but my second (now 6 months) prefers to drink small amounts (an once to now 4 oz.) every hour or two. Fun during the night! Some are just different--at this age, I'd go with whatever works and gets you some sleep. Is he sleeping propped up? That helps after eating, too

My newborn never slept. Ever. She maybe dozed for 20 minutes here and there. So I really don't think there is any hard and fast rule...

Most newborns are only awake for 1 1/2 to 2 hours at a time. Many times if you wait too long to put them back to sleep they become over tired and are VERY difficult to put down for a nap. I always recommend "Healthy sleep habits, happy child". I found it so helpful. My DD was extremely fussy and colicky. It helped me a lot along with the "Happiest baby on the block" book.

at 3 weeks old, i'd feed on demand, esp if you're bfing. trying to schedule or space out feedings this early is going to mess up your supply. as a nb, sometimes dd would sleep btw feedings, and other times she'd be awake. its pretty typical behavior.

I'd say newborns are supposed to do what every they want! I don't think I would try to impose a schedule at all at 3 weeks. DD typically ate every hour or two at that age although sometimes she would randomly take a 4 hour nap. I fed on demand and just let her eat and sleep whenever she wanted.

Re: Is a newborn supposed to sleep between each feeding?
At 3 weeks old, they do whatever they want! (well... at ANY age they seem to do whatever they want! )
My DD as a newborn slept all.day.long, even slept while eating!
My DS as a newborn NEVER slept.
ETA: at 3 weeks old, they generally go through a growth spurt where they want to eat what seems like every hour! At this age you should feed on demand. IMO 3-4 hours between feedings for a newborn that age, is not realistic.

Re: Is a newborn supposed to sleep between each feeding?
Thanks for all the replies! I was feeding on demand and when I told the dr. he sometimes wants to eat constantly, he told me to try and space out the feedings. I think he was going through a growth spurt and it was freakng me out a bit but seems to be giving me a little bit of a break today
