Making mommy friends?

I am new to board, I have one dc at home and one on the way. I moved to Long Island a few years ago, I am a working mom and have had a hard time meetings friends, I am in sales so I don't work in an office, and I am a pretty quiet person, more of an introvert in my personal life, tried a meetup group but was to clique for me. And Most of my friends live out of state or have no kids so hard to relate to in some situations. My family is great but they are family.

So after all that, how did you meet mommy friends? Any advice?

Re: Making mommy friends?

I've met other mommies at library classes, baby classes and on here. I've found it's pretty hard to make new friends, a lot of people just want to keep to themselves, but there are friendly people out there :)

Making mommy friends?

ITA w/the PP. Try some library groups and maybe some of the get togethers put on by LIF. Those could be great ways to meet people. I am in a very similar situation and it took time but I did eventually find some friends I am close to now. Oddly enough, they are also not from LI.

I will echo everyone and say library groups and I actually joined a nice meetup group, too...where do your kids go during the day? I've met some parents that way, too..during pickup and dropoff

Re: Making mommy friends?

I think it is a numbers game. If you meet a lot of people, you will eventually click with someone. I do think it is harder to make friends in adult life.

We recently moved to the DC area. In NY, I had very few mommy friends but a lot of non-parent friends so I hung out with them mostly.

When we moved to DC, I joined a lot of mom's groups and went to a few events on meetup. I've made a handful of family friends from meetup surprisingly. A bunch of us get together on the weekends. We are also friendly with a few families from preschool. I met them on the birthday party circuit. We take turns hosting playdates after school.

As a FTWM, I think this is a tricky thing. I can't do Play dates during the week and want to spend time with my hubby on the weekend. I have a few close non mommy friends.

I end up hanging out with two friends who also work. See them each every other month. We also have family with kids. See them. With that schedule, we end up totAlly booked.

Re: Making mommy friends?

I became friendly with a few of the moms @ daycare.
Once the boys became friends, we'd get them together on a Saturday morning at the park or something .....

I also found my son's birthday party helped - LOL. You actually get to speak to the parents for longer than the 5 second rush in, rush out "Hi, How are you?" in the am/pm!

I have also randomly met Moms at the playground - I've found that if someone is alone, or with A friend they are MUCH more open to bringing a stranger into their group. I loathe pulling up to the playground on a day off when it's already full of the 'regulars'

Re: Making mommy friends?

I went to some gtg's when I was pg, and then once my DC were born, and that is where I met some mommy friends. Our kids are now friends.

Re: Making mommy friends?

i was one of the first of my friends to have children...when DD was little i joined the MOMS CLUB. It is an international organization for babies/kids and mothers. If you go to momsclub.org you can find one in your area. We used to meet up at the park, the library, the zoo, and many other local places. i also started a playgroup with 3 other moms in my area and we would rotate houses for playdates. it was great interaction for both myself and my DD when DS was born i did the same. It was a great experience and i met some great friends. I did not feel it was a click everone was great because we were all looking for the same thing for ourselves and kids.

Both of my children are in elementary school and even though we dont do playgroups anymore, we still see each other from time to time and some people that we know, go to the same school as my children . If that is something that doesnt work for you...check your area for parent/tot programs. some are free some have a fee....i am in town of babylon, so i joined parent/tot class at phelps lane in n babylon for a cheap fee and it was a weekly class for one hour. THey did a craft, a cirlce time with singing, snack time and free play. it was the perfect program for my kids when they were little. and i met alot of moms there as well
THey go up to i believe 4yrs old i only did it until my kids were 2 then they went to a preschool....im not sure how old your DC is but when he/she is old enough for preschool you will meet ALOT of moms there as well and form many friendships. My best friends today , was made because of my children attending preschool and meeting such amazing people! Good luck to you,

How did the Saturday playdates come about though?

It's hard for me, I drop her off early in AM and don't usually see other parents from her class and DH picks up in the PM.

I planned her birthday party with the hopes of above but it really did not make a difference at all!! Even when I pass parents who were at the party, I still get the 5 second rush Chat Icon

Making mommy friends?

I have had such a problem with this. I feel like something is wrong with me that I can't make mommy friends, but I am very shy at first. I have. 3 year old and a 1 year old. We go to all the classes and ds goes to school. Just can't seem to make friends to have playmates with and maybe a mommy to have mommy's night out.

Where are you located??

I put a lot of effort into meeting parents of classmates. I may try extra hard because we moved OOS and we don't have any other old friends to hang out with.

I didn't really get to know people until 1 full year of DS being in preschool. At last year's open house, I felt bad because some parents seemed to know each other already and no one talked to me. Then I started seeing the same faces at school events (Halloween parade, Thanksgiving lunch, holiday party, valentine's day party, etc). Even then I didn't really know anyone. I would just say hi to people. Many parents I met for the first time at my son's birthday party but we had so many people I barely talked to them.

Then I hosted an end of school year bbq at the end of the school year this summer. I invited the entire class and all the teachers. Most of the class came. One mom in particular lived super close to us so we started making afternoon and weekend plans. They are also from NY so we get along great.

I'm hosting another Halloween party at our house this weekend. 10 kids from the class will be attending. I know half the kids but the other 5 I will be meeting for the first time.

I don't really know .......I started talking to Sean's BFF's Mom, she's a teacher so over the summer her son isn't @ daycare. So I aksed for her cell number so we could get the kids together ......then as as he started making more friends, I'd offer to include the other Moms/kids -
For his birthday party I put notes in their Thank You cards offering to send them links to the pictures, with my email address - it's all very informal, but now that we all have accumulated each other's actual names (as in, Marisa, not 'Sean's Mommy') cell numbers and emails it's easy to just shoot out a text on a Saturday morning to a bunch of people and say 'hey, taking the kids to x park @ 11 if anyone is free to play!" - sometimes we end up w/ a crew of 10 kids, sometimes I'm there alone - lol.
But I don't do anything formal, I'd LIKE to, in theory, but I don't have the time commuting into the city and getting home at 6:00 every night - other obligations on the weekends etc. But mornings at the park seem to work out

I work about 30 hours a week. We only hang out with the one family during the week. They live down the street so we will hang out for an hour or so before dinner. Sometimes they hang out and the dad comes over for dinner after he gets home from work.

All other playdates are on the weekends.
