Depends on your definition of "fine" living - if it were fine as in we are just getting by, I might say work more for the betterment of the future of our family. If it were fine as in we are comfortable, have savings, can afford to take vacations - then i'd put the good schedule/more family time ahead of the financial aspect.

dh could make more some place else but we have a great home/life balance and enough money to be happy off of.
money is not everything.

Re: Preference on DH's work hours?
I think it sounds like he has the perfect hours/set-up now. I don't think it's worth the extra $$ for him to work crazy hours...assuming you have small kids,. this is a time in your life where time is more valuable than $$. He can help you out, get to spend time with the kids, etc. things you can't put a price tag on!

This exactly. As long as all of our bills are paid and we have some savings, I will take the job with less hours over more money any day. Now if we were struggling financially, I would obviously choose the job with more pay. I just feel like this time with the kids is so precious and goes by so fast that I wouldn't want over extend myself career wise if I didn't have to. Then again... I am someone with absolutely ZERO career ambition so take my opinion with a grain of salt!

Re: Preference on DH's work hours?
I would love it if my DH got home every day at 3:30. I would rather the 40 set hours per week than a lot for a few years. Those few years would be our child's early years (you have small childen too right?) and he would basically miss all that.
But, at the end of the day in your scenario it would be my DH's decision, not mine, and he would have to be the one willing to put in all that extra time if that was his choice. When it comes to career decisions, I basically support my DH whatever he decides - it's not for me to say that he should work more/less hour or to decide his career track.

Re: Preference on DH's work hours?
honestly with small kids at home, i'd rather keep the normal 40 hrs a week instead of him working more.
Once they're in school... then maybe change things up a bit then. But while they're young... i'd want him to spend more time with the kids.

Preference on DH's work hours?
My DH is in a private practice (corporate law) and has long unpredictible hours. He leaves in the morning and can get home as early as 7 and as late as 2/3am. He also comes home and works more at home most nights and Sunday evenings are almost always spent working. It's a sacrifice. He could work in house somewhere and make 65% of what he does now, but we would have to make big changes in our lifestyle. We talk about this all the time but for now, he's staying and we have just made sure I have additional help at home so I don't go completely crazy with a 22 month old and 5 month old.

Re: Preference on DH's work hours?
Having been on both sides of this, I would choose more time. When our first child was born, my DH was in the kind of position where he got a VERY substantial bonus each year. The downside is, he was never home. Between long hours and travel, it took away so much family time.
Now DH works in a far more "normal" job. He travels maybe 2x a year for a few days, and eats dinner with us most nights. There is no giant bonus each year, but giving that up hasn't left us in a dangerous financial situation-- I stay home by choice, we go on vacations regularly, and our children attend private school. Sure, in his former position I could have afforded all the nannies, mother's helpers, and cleaning ladies I could have wanted to help me juggle it all by myself, but in the end I didn't want that. I wanted HIM there, not a staff.
Everybody is different of course, so I'm not saying this is the "right" way to go. It's just what felt right for our family.

Re: Preference on DH's work hours?
If your financial situation is stable enough where you are living comfortably and saving for all the things you need to save for (college, retirement, etc.) I would hands down choose less hours over more money.
Extra money means nothing to me if we are not spending time together as a family.
And for those who say it is for the DH to decide, I disagree. It is our family and if him working excessive hours (unnecessarily) negatively affects our family life, it is a decision we make together.
