Speech evaluation tomorrow
We initiated the early intervention evaluation for dd's speech with our district. Not sure what to expect. Not sure why I am feeling guilty and nervous. We want her to get help if she needs it.
Anyone have experience with Speech, Psychological and Social evals??

Yes, nothing to be nervous about. You are doing the right thing. The evaluation is actually fun for the kids. The speech therapist and other evaluators bring in toys and play with them. If your DC qualifies, getting her early intervention is the best thing you can do. Good luck!

Do not be nervous! They will treat the visit with your DC like it's a playdate. The evaluators play with the kids and try and engage them and will likely ask you questions. Then they will determine if your child needs services. It's pretty stress free and you will likely have some answers to questions you might have been having.

Re: Speech evaluation tomorrow
I'm a speech therapist and worked in EI for a little while. its really not bad they basically just play with your kid to see where they are at, while looking for certain skills, etc. they take notes, might mark some things down. They will also ask you questions as well. its all really laid back, and should be pretty low-stress. this is what they do everyday, so they are really good with the kids, and have seen pretty much everything good luck!!

Re: Speech evaluation tomorrow
Do not feel guilty. Like the others said... It's just a fun playdate for your dd. you are doing the right thing and she'll think she's playing with new friends and new toys. Be honest and DON'T sugarcoat it. That was the best advise I got. If you want her to get the extra help them let them know the issues. Don't point out all the positives, which is usually what you want to do. She needs the help and you want her to get it. Be honest and be real. I felt guilty when DS was evaluated. The eval went great bc he had fun. DH and myself first got a little upset when he qualified. It was hard to hear that yes.. He is delayed. Maybe we secretly wanted to hear he's doing great and there's nothing to worry about. The thing is whether or not she qualifies there's nothing to worry about. If she does qualify then great... She will be getting service with some amazing EI therapists who want nothing, but to work with your DD to get her up to speed and teach you how to communicate and work ith her as well. If she doesn't qualify then they'll give you some great pointers to help push her a bit. DS has been thriving because of EI. I'm a huge advocate. The earlier you get them help the better and before you know it she'll be talking up a storm. Good luck either way! You're a great mom!
