DS's who needed to be recircumcised or were at risk to be please come in..

DS's circumsicion was apparently not done well. There was some extra skin and some has reattached.

The doctor said that if we continue to use vaseline and work on it we may not have to recirumcise..it looks better since we have been diligently working on it....

So please tell me your experience if your DS was recirumcized, how old was he? what was it like for him (overnight? how was recovery?)

Also if you were told you might need to but ended up not how did that go?
thanks

I did n't have DS circumcised in the hospital. He is almost 10m and we are having it done next month. It is an out patient proceedure so you are in and out the same day. The Dr (urologist) told me to expect 1 day of crankiness and then he should be fine. No restriction on activity except a jumperoo type thing. And overall heal time woudl be 2 weeks. My guess is if it is less than a full circumcism then it might even be less recovery.

Re: DS's who needed to be recircumcised or were at risk to be please come in..

My ds needed to be recirc right before his 2nd b-day. He had the procedure done around lunchtime. I was not allowed in the room when they put him out because I was preggo but dh said it was really hard to watch & he is never a softie on anything. He said that when they put the mask over his face, he started to freak out a little & actually held his breath like he knew he shouldn't be breathing in what was coming out of his mask. After the surgery, they let us into recovery just as he was waking up & he totally flipped out as soon as he came to.
He was also given somthing to numb him from the waist down so he couldn't feel his legs (can't remember what it was- I think some type of numbing cream?). He was hysterical. We couldn't console him at all. Eventually, he started to become his normal self & he was fed cheerios, which made him very happy. We arrived home around 5 or 6pm. Put him to bed for the night shortly after & he slept through the night with the help of tylenol codeine. He didn't need any pain meds the next day & was running around and playing like nothing happened. He wasn't allowed to straddle anything for 2 weeks. We applied bacitracin for a few weeks & it healed perfectly.

DS was just over 1 when he had to be put under to have his circumcision redone. I was VERY nervous, but the urologist (Dr. Palmer) was VERY calm and extremely reassuring as was the anesthesiologist. I was able to go into the ER while they gave DS sweet air. Overall we were in and out of the LIJ outpatient center (across the street from LIJ/Cohens) in just about 4.5-5 hours. That's total time, including wait time in the beginning and end. If its just a simple circumcision it could even be less. He healed quickly and easily, and it looks great !! The only restrictions were no hip holding, no carrier, no jumparoo/exosaucer, etc. Anything that put pressure on the crotch area.

When you say the Dr is telling you, do you mean your pediatrician or a urologist? If you haven't seen a urologist you might want to just to get his/her specialist opinion. I took DS to Dr. Palmer in Lake Success (new Hyde park) and absolutely love him.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask!!

Thank you. His ped mentioned when he was younger that there was extra skin and that it would probably not be an issue as it grew but to use vaseline. We did use vaseline but sporadicaly and never really pulled it down, tugging on it bc we didnt realize we should be that...

At his one year the ped said we needed to vaseline and tug for a minute or more every diaper change. There seems to be some improvement. Thank you for the recommendation I think I will have a urologist look Chat Icon

DS's original circ left a little too much skin, but that wasn't the main concern. There was reattachment in places but not all the way around. He also had skin bridges and an issue with the head which we would have never known about if we didn't see the urologist. Pulling back wouldn't have done anything in the long run. DH and I went to the urologist with the mind set of if it was purely cosmetic then we would wait, but if there were other issues then we would have it redone. The urologist was very open and honest about the physical issues that DS could have has he got older (which he would have had with or without the first circ anyway) so it was a no brainer for us to have it fixed.

Without seeing a specialist we would have never know about the other issues.

My DS also had the reattachment issue. He is 6 months but I think it was 4 or 5 months he went to urologist and it was corrected. It was not a fun experience but it had to be done. To me the skin still looks weird, so when we go next week for his 6 month check up at the Pediatrician I am going to ask to make sure it is ok.

Re: DS's who needed to be recircumcised or were at risk to be please come in..

My son was not able to get circumsized at birth due to an abnormality. Once he was 6 months they did an ambulatory surgery out patient procedure. He then had his abnormality fixed and was circumsized at the same time. Recovery was harder for my DS because of his abnormality. Not the circumsization itself. But I am so glad I did it then. He will never remember I meet other moms in the waiting room and in the dr's office of older children and how they regret not doing to earlier.
